Sciatica occurs when your sciatic nerve—which runs from your buttocks down to your feet—gets pinched. As you may imagine, this is extremely painful and can result in sudden and sharp pain, soreness, numbness and/or tingling. Some people may even have trouble walking or standing due to the pain. It’s estimated that as many as 40 percent of people will have sciatica at some point. Some unlucky patients will even experience flare-ups of sciatica over their lifetime.
Most cases of sciatica pain emanates from one of three areas:The lower back or lumbar region of the spine (L4/L5).The sacroiliac (SI) joint in the pelvis.The piriformis muscle in the buttock or other deep gluteal muscles. Remember, sciatica pain may include:Lower back pain, Burning or tingling down the leg. Weakness, numbness, or difficulty moving your leg or foot. Consistent pain on one or both side of the buttocks.
