In 370 schools across England, children will be taught how to meditate, techniques for muscle relaxation and breathing exercises for mindfulness. The secondary school students will also get a more hands-on education to learn about awareness and how to increase this in their everyday lives. 😌

Most of the time, when children act out by kicking and screaming expletives, it is because they do not understand what they are going through, and cannot find a better way to release their feelings.

“Silence is a source of great strength.”
Lao Tzu

Silence has been my most indispensable friend and most valuable teacher. It has taught me every important lesson I’ve learned.

When I’m feeling stressed and anxious, Silence dissipates it for me.

When I’m feeling scared and confused, Silence illuminates the way.

When I’m feeling angry and frustrated, Silence calms me.
When I’m feeling judgmental and critical, Silence shows me patience and understanding.

When I’m feeling overwhelmed with emotions, Silence allows me the space to release.

When I’m feeling unworthy and unlovable, Silence showers me with unconditional love.

When life seems unfair, Silence helps me to understand.

When I’m out in nature, Silence reveals our inseparability.

When I’m with my friends and family, Silence strengthens our bonds.

When I’m with myself, there is no longer Silence and I. There is only One.

Your body posture changes how you feel and how much risk you'll take.

You are probably familiar with all the ways that we communicate non-verbally to other people through our body posture, our hand gestures and facial expressions. But you may not be aware of how strongly you are communicating not only to others, but to yourself.

I'm not talking about how your body reacts to how you feel. You probably know that already—when you are having a great day, and you feel on top of the world, you smile, walk energetically, stand erect and maybe even gesture largely with your hands. When you are having a bad day, and you feel like the world is getting you down, you hunch over and frown.

No, I'm talking about something much more radical. The communication between your body posture and your feelings also goes the otherway. You can change the way you feel based on how you hold your body. You can change your brain chemistry, and the actions you take or don't take.

Smile And You Can't Feel Angry. David Havas (2010) gave people instructions to contract specific muscles—the muscles used in smiling. When the participants contracted those muscles they had a hard time generating a feeling of anger. When he instructed them to contract the muscles that are used when you frown, the participants had a hard time feeling friendly or happy.

Change Your Life In Two Minutes—Going even further, Amy Cuddy has researched how large body postures change brain and body chemistry. When people sit or stand with their bodies taking up space, arms expanded, legs open, they produce more testosterone and less stress hormones. They are also more likely to take risks. In her research she has people take large body postures for two minutes before they do things like go for a job interview. The results are quite astounding. Striking a "large body" pose for two minutes resulted in different behavior, and therefore signficant changes in their lives.

What do you think? Have you tried purposely striking a "large posture" pose before an important meeting or presentation?

Full relaxation.

At least once per day, relax fully the yogic way. Set a timer for 3–11 minutes. Focus on relaxing, disregarding any mini-emergencies or inspirations that may call upon you to jump up and tend to them during this time—continue to relax. It can all wait 11 minutes.

Try it:

Lie down on your back with palms up and legs spread or seat comfortably. Close your eyes and slow down your breathing. Consciously relax your limbs, torso, and any other part of your body allowing you to surrender to the pull of gravity. Sink deeply into your mat.

I want to share with you a little creative experiment.

The ear pressure pose. An asana that drives me to an intimate conversation with my body, a restorative mindfulness.

I find relief as I expose my body to a stretch of brutal intensity. I give myself Karnapidasana at the end of my yoga practice, before I return from my isolation to reality.

I want to talk about The Heart Chakra.

On the emotional side, yoga supports a healthy, open heart. In life we go through many things: loss, heartbreak, betrayal- a wide array of emotional hurts. Over time, these experiences cause us to put up little walls around our hearts. We believe that if we can just protect our hearts behind these walls, that we will avoid getting hurt, so we slowly begin to close off, adding layer upon layer over our vulnerable hearts.

The heart chakra (one of the major energy centers in the body located at the center of the chest) then becomes closed.

The heart chakra is related to our ability to give and receive love. When it is closed or imbalanced, we find it difficult to feel love, compassion, grace, and peace. We may instead feel anger, grief, and bitterness. Additionally, this imbalance can manifest in a variety of physical ailments such as lung problems, breast cancer, a compromised immune system, and blood diseases.

If you have ever read about healing the body by healing the mind, you know that holding onto negative beliefs and thought patterns causes disease within the physical body. If we can address the emotional blockages, we can heal the body more effectively.

"The way is not in the sky. The way is in the heart." ~Buddha

Back bending poses (actually referred to as “heart openers”) help you open and balance the heart chakra, and release tension and blocked emotions.
