Summer holiday dreaming today! This has been a pretty fabulous summer for me and one of the highlights was sailing away for a weekend in Sardinia whilst being surrounded by rustic scenery and beautiful animals. It made me realise how powerful connecting with nature can be. Taking the time out to listen to your body and what it needs can be a very powerful tool. Making strict diet or drastic lifestyle changes too quickly can lead to burn out. Therefore, it is so important to listen to what your body truly needs, before making any dietary changes.

Love it when my best friend comes to stay and brings great edible presents! Loving the goodness of matcha green tea right now!

The high antioxidant content of green tea is approx. 10 times higher in matcha compared to regular green tea, as the whole tealeaf is ground up into a fine powder in order to make matcha! My favourite thing about it is that you don´t have to drink it to reap the benefits! Because it is a nice fine powder, it can be added to baking, pancakes or smoothies! Happy Friday!!

Sugar News Alert!! Sugar is a hot topic at the moment, with sugar free diets being the new craze, but what sugar is ok and what should we be cutting down on?

Last Friday, the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition made new recommendations on sugar for the British Government. They recommended that sugar which is added to food should be called ´Free Sugars´. This includes all added sugars, honey, maple syrup and agave syrup as well as fruit juices. It has been recommended that in order to control our energy intake and help weight maintenance, we limit free sugars to 5% of our energy intake.

This would mean limiting our free sugar intake to 30g a day for most adults (aged 11+), 24g a day for children aged 7-10 and 4-6g a day for children aged 4-6.

The below is a guide for understanding how quickly eating 30g free sugars can add up:

1 teaspoon of sugar is 5g of sugar
Coke has 35g sugar (355ml can)
Cranberry Juice has 29g sugar (250ml serving)
Mars Bar has 33g sugar (51g bar)

The new recommendations are only for sugars that have been removed from their natural casing. Sugars not included in the 30g sugar limit are fresh fruits, dried fruits or dairy products.

Calculating the amount of sugar we are eating isn´t always easy, but it is something to be mindful of, especially for weight maintenance and overall health!

This is my new favourite, cooling summer breakfast! Delicious and full of fibre to kick the digestive system into action first thing in the morning (helping to prevent bloating later in the day!). Oats soaked overnight in the fridge with coconut milk, a little honey with nuts and seeds, topped with fresh seasonal berries! I will post the full recipe soon. Have a great weekend!

My vacation is continuing today with a little trip to Morocco and once I get back I will be fully on board with more updates (promise!)!

But recently, I have been researching the diet in Morocco… a great example of a healthy Mediterranean style diet for optimum health and happiness! High in whole grains (making up almost 50% of the diet), high in fish, low in animal proteins (such as dairy and meat) with the main source of fat being from olive oil. The Moroccan green & mint tea also helps to pack in antioxidants and flavonoids for heart protection as well. All of these factors help to keep cancer rates low in the country compared to many countries in Europe or the US. Here´s to whole grains and veggies for long term health benefits rather than diets for short quick fixes!!
