End of the state of alarm...and now what?

Last week I gave a webinar for the BCN city hall on how to stay healthy both physically and mentally working from home. Challenging as it was to adapt to this “obligation”, now going back to the new normal has its challenges as well.
This article is interesting in my opinion and in line with what I do coaching clients at the moment. Most important is to stay in the moment and focus on things you can control; the future is impossible to foreseen and control; always and now even more!

Evaluate what worked well for you over the last months (new activities/habits) and try to keep them as part of your life. This will mean that at least this will have a positive effect on your physical and mental energy in the new normal; make this part of the “normal” and then let’s see what the external “new” influences will bring.
Prepare yourself the best you can starting by what you know works well for you!!

In this blog article, we provide some key points to help easy any anxiety you may have around coming out of quarantine.

Working from home offers a lot of advantages like flexibility, efficiency and no commute but it's not as easy and fun as you might think. To take the most of it, it is important to follow some rules like establishing a daily routine and maintaining your mental and physical health.

This Thursday, June 18th, in collaboration with City Promotion, Barcelona City Council, our physiotherapist Koen Peter Willems will give an online workshop with practical advice on ergonomics, stretching and stress management and how to take advantage of all that Barcelona offers you to establish a healthy balance that will make your mind and your body happy.

Programme:

15:05h - Practical tips to stay healthy working from home in Barcelona, Koen Willems, Physiotherapist, trainer & coach, HealthcareBarcelona.com, PhysiotherapyBarcelona.com, RunningBarcelona.com

15:45h - Q&A

For our Dutch followers: in the podcast organized by Kring Nederlands Bedrijfsleven in Barcelona (Dutch Business Network in Barcelona) physiotherapist and coach Koen Peter Willems explains you how to manage your physical and mental energy during this period.

Goods news!
Our physiotherapists are working again!

Of course we will be working with all the necessary Corona safety measures:
- There will only be working 1 physiotherapist at a time wearing a face mask
- Only you and your physiotherapist will be at the centre, so no open waiting areas
- We will do smart planning with always 15 minutes in between clients to prevent crossing each other
- Each client will be treated in a different disinfected room with natural ventilation
- Maximum hygiene measures including disinfection gel and (preferably) paying by card

Mental coaching in times of (Corona) quarantine; “slow down you move too fast...”

Here in Barcelona just like in many places all over the world the world came to an almost complete standstill over the last weeks.
More than ever I receive questions on how to deal with the stress of not “producing” anything. People apparently feel a bit lost when not “scoring”.
This off course is in line with the values of our occidental capitalist society where we are taught to “earn” points buy doing more (endless to-do-lists) and/or having more (more cloths, a better bank account, a nicer house...).

With this standstill this scoring gets complicated and we have to live with daily life without moving forward.
I often compare life to running and one of my favorite lines is “if you run fast the advantage is that you don’t have time to see what’s surrounding you”...in daily life this means that running keeps you away from dealing with how you really feel and which choices you have made over your life. For some people this is easier than coping with reality.

Now it’s time to sit still and look around, reflect and question yourself on your basic existence.
WHO AM I?? What characteristics do I have? I bet you ARE more then just a do-er and a collector of things.
You ARE a nice and honest person, you ARE patient and a good listener, you ARE creative, you ARE a good parent/friend/daughter/son, you ARE okay with yourself reading a book or listening to nice music.

“The more you ARE less you have to DO or HAVE to compensate”

If this sounds familiar, I invite you to make a “to-BE-list” where you focus on things in your live that have to do with experiences on feelings and BE-ing. If you manage you will feel better now and in the future, feel less stress of not “scoring points” and for sure raise your positive energy. Enjoy this exercise which might need some training 😉!

To help the song Society of Eddy Vedder might be a good motivator and reminder!!
