Why Does a “Dead” Tooth Still Hurt?
A common question from patients:
“If the nerve was removed, why does the tooth still hurt?”
Let’s break it down 👇
After the nerve is removed, the tooth does become “dead” — there is no longer any pulp or nerve tissue inside. But that doesn’t mean the surrounding tissues can’t feel pain.
So what actually hurts?
▪️ The tissues around the root
Even after the nerve is removed, the ligaments, bone, and gums around the tooth are still alive and can become inflamed.
▪️ Complications after root canal treatment
Sometimes discomfort happens because of:
— inflammation at the tip of the root
— incomplete cleaning of the canals
— a missed canal
— filling material extending beyond the root
— a crack in the tooth
▪️ A normal reaction after treatment
Mild sensitivity when biting for a few days after a root canal can be normal. But if the pain gets worse, swelling appears, or you feel throbbing — it’s important to see your dentist.
It’s important to understand:
A “dead” tooth should not hurt constantly. If the pain continues, your body is signaling that something needs attention.
Don’t ignore the discomfort — the earlier the cause is found, the easier the treatment ✨
