The Importance of Bowel Cancer Testing — And Why Cases Are Rising in Younger People.

Bowel cancer is one of the most common cancers, but it is also one of the most treatable when it is found early. That is why bowel cancer testing is so important.

Many people feel nervous or embarrassed about bowel-related symptoms or home stool tests, but early testing can make a life-saving difference. Our Bowel screening kit we use at Medcare, is a simple home test that looks for tiny traces of blood in a stool sample that may not be visible. Detecting possible warning signs early can help identify cancer sooner, when treatment is more likely to be successful.

Why bowel cancer seems to be rising in younger people

One of the most worrying recent trends is the increase in bowel cancer in younger adults. Research from the American Cancer Society reports that colorectal cancer incidence is rising in adults under 65, with rates increasing by around 3% per year in people aged 20 to 49, while rates in older adults have been falling. Other recent analyses have also described a long-term rise in early-onset colorectal cancer in people under 50.

If you’re concerned and experiencing symptoms, you should always talk to your GP. For the month of April we have a bowel screen promotion for Members 45 euros and Non-Members 65 Euros! For further information call Medcare on 966 860 258 or email doctors@medcarespain.com.

Dental Implants: A Life-Changing Solution for Missing Teeth

For people seeking permanent tooth replacement, dental implants provide the perfect solution.

Dental implants are false teeth, usually ceramic, which fit onto a screw-like fixture that is surgically implanted in the bone of the jaw.

Dental implants look completely natural and are indistinguishable from natural teeth.

Implant surgery can be used to replace a single tooth or a number of adjacent teeth. If a number of teeth are being replaced, not all of the teeth will need their own ´screw root´. The dentist will insert the necessary number of implants and then make bridges between implanted teeth or between implanted and natural teeth.

What happens during implant surgery?

Bone is exposed in the jaw where the tooth is missing. Then a hole is drilled and the implant is inserted into bone. This is usually carried out under local anaesthetic.

The gum is then stitched over the implant and left to heal for several months. This allows the bone to grow around the implant and make it secure.

A second procedure is then planned in which replacement teeth are mounted onto the implant. This requires a small cut in the gum above the implant. Once the soft tissues have healed, the replacement teeth may be fixed permanently.

Amazing Aesthetics transformation!
Patient Case Study: Mrs. M

Mrs. M has been a regular Aesthetic patient of Dr. Hussain since 2020, when she first attended for a consultation regarding concerns about the perioral area, particularly volume loss and the appearance of fine lines.

Since her initial consultation, Mrs. M has undergone a carefully tailored programme of subtle aesthetic treatments designed to maintain a natural and refreshed appearance. Over the years, these have included dermal filler treatments, mesotherapy, and Profhilo. Most recently, she completed a course of six skin peels, which produced excellent improvements in overall skin quality, texture, and radiance while maintaining a very natural result.

Her primary concerns have remained the fine lines and skin texture around the mouth area. Following her recent course of peels, combined with exosome therapy, she has achieved a fantastic outcome, with visible improvement in skin smoothness and rejuvenation. She has been so pleased with the results that she has since chosen to begin a further course of peels with us.

Mrs. M’s journey is a wonderful example of how small, carefully considered tweakments over time can create beautifully understated, long-term results. Now in her eighties, her skin appears healthier, smoother, and more refined, demonstrating how a consistent and personalised treatment approach can support graceful ageing exceptionally well.

“I would like to thank the Medcare team for introducing the Skin Peel treatment to their clinic and particularly to Fabienne who administered my treatment beautifully pain free, caringly and professionally. After each one of the six sessions, my skin appeared more wonderfully radiant and luminous, and reducing signs of aging lines and encouraging collegen! After my six sessions I am told that I look at least 10 years younger so I’m absolutely overjoyed with the results and will most certainly recommend the Skin Peel as a must have treatment.”

If you’re ready to start your Aesthetics journey with Dr Hussain please call Medcare on 966 860 258 or email doctors@medcarespain.com to book in for a free consultation!

Sir Stephen Fry’s story

Sir Stephen Fry has openly talked about prostate cancer. Like Hoy, his journey also began without symptoms after his doctor suggested a health MOT while he was getting a flu jab.

His doctor called him the next day, worried about his raised PSA levels.

After several scans and biopsies, Fry underwent a radical laparoscopic prostatectomy to remove the prostate and surrounding lymph nodes. He was incredibly lucky to detect the cancer so early.

From his experience, he urges “men of a certain age” to get their PSA levels checked. As prostate cancer affects so many men, it’s a good idea to check you’re not at risk.

Don't leave it too late!! Book your PSA Blood test today! Call Medcare on 966 860 258 or email doctors@medcarespain.com!

PSA testing on the rise: How Chris Hoy is driving prostate cancer awareness.

Since his diagnosis, the cycling legend has been raising awareness of prostate cancer, prompting a surge in PSA testing.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, with over 63,000 men diagnosed annually in the UK and approximately 12,000 dying from the disease.

Over the last five years, demand for our prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test has increased by an average of 40% each year. The sharpest rise in testing was seen between 2024 and 2025.

So, what is driving almost more men to get a prostate cancer screen? A certain six-time Olympic gold medallist and national treasure may have had something to do with it.

When Sir Chris Hoy revealed his diagnosis of prostate cancer in 2024, it pushed men to take their health into their own hands. His announcement raised awareness on a scale that only the power of the media could achieve.

Sir Chris Hoy’s story
In February 2024, after a journalist got hold of the news, Sir Chris Hoy announced that he was undergoing chemotherapy, following a cancer diagnosis.

At 47 years old, the cycling champion went to the doctor with shoulder pain, thinking maybe he’d overdone it at the gym. A scan revealed a tumour. Further scans revealed more. The cancer, which began in his prostate, had spread to his bones and was terminal.

Prostate cancer affects one out of eight men in the UK. Despite the vulnerable situation of having his diagnosis thrown into the spotlight, Hoy used the opportunity to start a national conversation, advocating for men’s health and resonating with millions.

With the resilience so many cancer patients possess, Hoy inspired millions of men to take proactive steps towards looking after their health, such as booking PSA tests.

How Gum Disease Impacts Your Health

When people think about improving their health, things like getting more exercise, eating more vegetables and getting more sleep often come to mind. Taking better care of your gums and teeth probably doesn’t make the list, but it should. Dental and medical professionals alike agree that gum health is important not just for your mouth, but for your whole body.

Poor gum health increases the risk of heart attack, cancer, and Alzheimer’s disease.

Periodontal disease is a disease that affects the gums and supporting structures of the teeth. The bacteria present in plaque cause periodontal disease.

Our experienced Medcare dentists can treats the following diseases:

Gingivitis: It is the inflammation of the gums caused by the accumulation of bacterial plaque.

Periodontitis: This is a more serious disease than gingivitis and can destroy the bone that supports the teeth.

Gingival retraction: It is the recession of the gingival tissue that exposes the root of the tooth.

Peri-implant disease: This is the inflammation of the tissues surrounding a dental implant.

Symptoms of periodontal disease include:

· Bad breath

· Irritation, redness, swelling and bleeding of your gums

· Mobility of teeth

· Gingival retraction

· Painful chewing

· Receding gums

· Changes in bite (the way your teeth fit together when you bite or chew)

How are periodontal diseases prevented?

Periodontal disease can be prevented with good oral hygiene, which includes:

· Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.

· Floss once a day.

· Visit your dentist for regular dental cleanings.

Treatments for periodontal diseases

Treatments for periodontal disease vary depending on the severity of the disease.

Some of the most common treatments include:

Professional dental cleanings: Remove plaque and tartar from teeth.

Laser treatment

Curettage: This is a procedure that removes bacterial plaque and tartar from periodontal pockets.

Periodontal surgery: Performed in more severe cases to correct defects in the gum tissue and bone that supports the teeth.

Homocysteine test at Medcare!

What is Homocysteine?
Homocysteine is an amino acid. Vitamins B12, B6 and folate break down homocysteine to create other chemicals your body needs. High homocysteine levels may mean you have a vitamin deficiency. Without treatment, elevated homocysteine increases your risks for blood clots, heart disease and stroke.

What causes high homocysteine levels?
High homocysteine levels could mean you have a medical condition. But other factors can affect your homocysteine (Hcy) blood levels, including:
• Getting older
• Being male or reaching menopause if you’re female
• Using to***co products

Homocysteine can make it easier for atherosclerosis (fat and cholesterol buildup) to start. It can also make it worse. High homocysteine levels can also lead to blood clots or blood vessel blockages. Artery damage, atherosclerosis and blood clots raise your risk of:
• Heart attack
• Stroke
• Atrial fibrillation (a type of abnormal heart rhythm)

You may have too much homocysteine in your blood if you have:
•Chronic kidney disease
•Deficiencies (not enough) in vitamins B12, B6 or folate
•Dementia
•Heart disease
•Homocystinuria (when your body can’t process methionine)
•Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid)
•Osteoporosis
•Psoriasis

What are the signs I may need a homocysteine test?
You may need a homocysteine blood test if you have symptoms of a vitamin B deficiency. Common symptoms of vitamin B deficiencies include:
•Dizziness
•Fatigue
•Heart palpitations
•Muscle weakness
•Skin color changes
•Tingling in your feet, arms or hands
•Tongue or mouth sores

If you would like to check your homocysteine levels please call Medcare today on 966 860 258 or email doctors@medcarespain.com.
