Let’s face it. Stress is a pain in the ……

And during times when stress is high, it is so easy to resort to judgment.

But did you know that curiosity drastically reduces stress way more effectively than judgement.

Why ?

Because judgement tightens and restricts thinking which then increases pressure but curiosity keeps options open which leads to creativity which, in turn, feels lighter and leads to have more fun and feeling better about the choices we make.

Asking yourself “why” is often way kinder than asking “what’s wrong” as It supports learning and movement without blame.

So instead of judging stressful situations, try wondering instead of criticising, asking honest questions and then letting the answer be unclear.

Which side of the equation do you fall onto - reacting or responding - especially during times of stress ?

Reactions are often automatic, not intentional and are sometimes not received very well by others.

Pausing for a few seconds can change how the body responds and gives your nervous system time to catch up, thereby reducing emotion and making a big difference in what happens next.

Not only does this reduce the risk of things escalating and getting out of hand and, with a slight pause, most reactions lose their intensity if they are not fuelled by emotion.

So how can you do this when stress is high ?

Pause before replying, allowing the moment to pass so that you can calm down and simply choosing not to escalate things.

And you know what happens when we are less reactive ? We simply feel better.

Give it a go and see what happens.

Many people say that they are perfectionists and strive for perfection even when they are not 100% certain of what perfection is.

As a result, perfection doesn’t actually make us happier because we don’t truly know what it is.

Think about it - have you ever done anything perfectly or have you always found something not quite right no matter how hard you tried ?

Striving for perfection keeps the body in a constant state of alert whereas “good enough” allows things to finish and complete themselves naturally.

Letting something to just be done reduces that internal mental load and constant tension, and that completion often feels way better than perfection.

So today, why not try stopping when something is finished rather than adding more, allowing others to fill in gaps and simply resist the urge to tweak and fine tune.

One thing we all try to achieve in life is balance.

And in order to achieve this, we try to control things but that is not where true balance comes from at all.

Balance is about adjustment, not control.

Trying to control everything increases tension whilst adjustment allows flexibility.

Our sense of balance changes constantly depending on external circumstances so responding to these rather than forcing them is easier.

Here’s a few ways to start finding balance:-

** Check in with yourself rather than forcing yourself to push through
** Change you pace half way through the day
** Allow things to be uneven and just go with the flow

When things get stressful, the most natural thing people resort to is to put pressure on themselves to try harder and do more.

But tying harder isn’t always helpful, especially when external (and internal) pressure is already high.

Pressure narrows thinking and reduces flexibility which, in turn, only increases all the stress chemicals in the body, magnifying what is going on.

Reducing expectations can quickly change how something feels.

Less pressure often leads to better outcomes anyway.

If you’re curious, you could try lowering today’s expectations slightly, doing fewer things more slowly or even letting one thing wait until tomorrow.

What expectations do you have that could be contributing to your stress levels ?

When we have a dip in energy or need to kickstart it at the beginning of the day, most people turn to the classic - a cup of coffee.

Whilst this can give it a boost, it doesn’t last and isn’t sustainable.

Energy often arrives after you start moving, not before.

Long periods of stillness and sitting in front of a computer screen has a not-so-positive effect of circulation and alertness amongst other things.

However, small movements help wake the body up.

You don’t need intensity for it to work.

If you want to, standing up regularly and taking a short walk, doings a quick 30-second stretch or simply moving without calling it exercise all help.

At the Retreat, we always start our day off with gentle movement and stretch before we dive into the full program - it's what the body deserves and needs.

How are you going to give your energy a boost today ?

Yes ! We missed a few days BUT that main thing is that we are back !!

Do you ever have those days where all your thoughts merge into one and you feel like your mind is shrouded in fog ?

We often relate mental fog to not knowing what to do but did you know it often comes from brain overload ?

When there is too much input and too much going on, the brain struggles to prioritise which leads to confusion, self-doubt and overwhelm.

But simply removing even one small thing helps to restore clarity because clear thinking often follows simplicity.

If you have that brain fog going on right now, here’s a few suggestions to try:-

** Writing one thing down instead of holding on to it and trying to remember it for later
** Clear up or declutter a small space in your surroundings
** Let some of your thoughts wait - you don’t have to deal with them all at once

How do you clear up your brain fog when it arrives ?

Day 10 - Feeling Supported

Have you ever tried to comfortably sit on a chair with 3 legs ? It just doesn’t work, does it !

Support reduces stress even when nothing else changes and feeling supported tells the body that it doesn’t have to manage and balance everything alone.

This reduces pressure and emotional load immediately.

Support doesn’t always mean solutions - it often just means sharing and asking for help.

Allowing yourself to feel supported can feel unfamiliar, but it really does contribute to feeling good.

If you’re curious, you could try:-

** Letting someone help without explaining
** Saying “yes, that would be nice”
** Not minimising what you need

How are you going to allow yourself to be supported today ?

One thing we truly love about running our programs is seeing familiar faces return.

Even though we are “working” it also feels like we are away from home with a group of really good friends - you laugh and joke, catch up on what’s been going on, go for walks together, sit down and eat great food and just generally have fun.

Even though it’s a health retreat, it also feels like a really good holiday - not only do you get rest and great company, you give your health a complete boost in the process.

There’s time to breathe and forget about things, time to move and be still, time to laugh and rest in silence, time to be looked after and taken care of but most of all, time to just be.

Thank you, Helen, for your kind words, and to everyone who comes back again and again, year after year.

You’re a huge part of what makes Sana Sana what it is.

If you’ve been feeling the nudge for some time, or wondering whether now might be the right moment, our doors are always open.

Day 9 - Feeling Present

Why is it that we can’t sit down and read 2 documents at once, or try to listen to the radio whilst watching the TV at the same time, yet we always try to multitask ?

That’s because the brain cannot properly focus on two things at once.

Multitasking and trying to do all the things more often than not increases stress, and when stress goes up, efficiency goes down as do our energy levels.

When attention is split all over the place, the body stays in a constant state of alert so doing one thing at a time reduces that background tension.

Being present usually brings relief, not effort.

So today, focus on doing one thing at a time, putting that thing down before you pick the next thing up and not rushing through those little in-between moments - not all the moments need to filled up all the time.

Day 8 - Feeling Steady

Whilst humans crave variety, did you know that simple, daily predictable routines can really help the body relax and that’s why we create our daily program so people know what lies ahead.

When life feels busy, confusing, overwhelming or uncertain, predictability creates a certain sense of stability.

Knowing what’s coming next reduces mental load and helps you to focus on what really needs focusing on.

Steadiness often feels better than excitement, especially when your energy levels are low. Repetition can be supportive, not boring.

Here’s a few ways you can create some predictable, daily routines:-

** Keeping one part of your day exactly the same
** Eating at regular times
** Find something that works and repeat it

How do you feel about predictability ?
