Costa Blanca Walks

Costa Blanca Walks WELCOME TO GEOFF'S COSTA BLANCA WALKS! http://www.costablancawalks.weebly.com Walks are from October to April. Often a car is needed to access the start.

Most are near Benidorm or Calpe, with a more northerly walk near Jalon or Gata once a month. There is a walk every Wednesday starting at 10.30 - these are usually the easier walks. On Saturdays we arrange longer walks with higher ascents so these tend to be moderate / hard. The aim of the walks is to enjoy the scenery and to make friends. The pace will be steady , with stops to admire the views, recover from climbs and examine features of interest. There will be a picnic lunch on the walk and a social drink at the end. The walks are of a moderate standard, divided into three grades:
^^ Easy Mod. 8km. 200m asc. 3hrs ( incl. stops)
^^^ Moderate 10 km 300m ascent 3.5 hrs ( incl. stops)
^^^^ Hard Mod. 12 km 400m ascent 4 hrs ( incl. stops )

There is no charge for the walks. If you want to show your appreciation then offer the leader a drink at the end. Many paths in Spain are rough and rocky , with steep sections with a loose surface requiring mountain boots with a thick sole , deep tread and ankle support. BOOTS MUST BE WORN FOR ALL WALKS! You will be required to sign in at the start to say that you walk at your own responsibility. YOU WALK AT YOUR OWN RISK. You need insurance. The Austrian Alpine Club UK for £36 a year covers rescue, medical and repatriation costs. I hope to see you on a walk soon, Geoff. WEDNESDAY 15TH APRIL - LA RUTA DE OCHO PUEBLOS ( LA VALL DE GALLINERA ) - MODERATE

The Route of the 8 Towns (Route of 8 Pobles), is a linear excursion of 16 kilometers in length that runs through the 8 towns of the Vall de Gallinera, a beautiful valley between mountains in the interior of the region of Marina Alta, north of the province of Alicante. It is known, among other things, for the cherry trees that populate the slopes of its mountains, offering the spectacle of flowering during the month of March.

The route, which begins in the Font de la Mata de Benirrama and ends at the Font de la Mata de Benissili, is signposted at all times and links the 8 villages of the valley: Benirrama, Benialí, Benissivà, Benitaia, La Carrotja, Alpatró, Llombay and Benissili.

This pleasant walk runs along old agricultural roads between farmhouses and fields, mostly from cherry trees, and the unevenness to overcome is quite mild (except for some occasional stretch), so it is recommended to any hiker who has a minimal habit of walking on the mountain.

The full eight villages walk is a linear walk of about 16 Kms requiring cars at both ends.
We will be doing a " panhandle " style walk of 12 Kms that cover five of these villages and with ascent of 250 metres overall.
We will start and end in the small village of Benirrama and park somewhere along the " Carrer Major"
Benirrama is just off the CV-700 coming from the town of Pego - the turnoff ( CV-7170) is 9.5 Kms from leaving Pego

WEDNESDAY 8TH APRIL - BOLULLA , 10 KMS (APPROX) , 350 METRES ASCENT ( APPROX ) - MODERATE

This is a newer walk so is also a reccee of sorts - be prepared for the odd diversion - note the use of " APPROX " !!

We start the walk climbing steadily out of Bolulla through terraces of almond and olive trees. The path weaves between dry-stone walls and smallholdings, gradually opening up wider views across the rugged interior of the Marina Baixa.

Approaching Tàrbena, the terrain softens slightly, and the village appears almost unexpectedly, perched among folds of green and ochre hills.

The return to Bolulla is where the walk truly comes into its own. Here, the route leaves the modern alternatives and commits to the beautifully restored Camí Vell, the old mule track that once connected the two villages - a wonderfully engineered path, with sections of original stone paving, tight zigzags, and perfectly graded slopes that reveal the craftsmanship of another era.
We will meet at 10:30 in Bolulla - As you come in to Bolulla ( on the CV-715 , 5 Km out of Callosa d'en Sarria )
note the bins on the RHS and turn right here and down to the riverside where there is parking.

Some pictures from a recent walk - we started from Sella and included the " Colera Walk " - a walk that the locals had to use back in 1885 when cholera infected the village and they needed a route that bypassed the village.

WEDNESDAY 25TH MARCH
Els Arcs Circular Walk

Location: On the Serra de Xortà/Aixortà between Tàrbena and Castell de Castells in the Costa Blanca interior
Type: Circular walking route (PR‑CV 151).
Distance: ~7 Kms
Time: ~3 hours
Difficulty: Easy to Medium — suitable for most walkers with a basic level of fitness; some uneven ground near the arches.

Begin where the PR‑CV 151 is signed at Pla d’Aialt (around the 7 km mark on the CV‑752 road between Tàrbena and Castell de Castells). There’s usually space to leave cars safely and an info board showing the route.

The focal point of the route: two impressive natural limestone arches carved over millions of years into the cliffs. The path to reach them leaves the main track for a short, slightly rougher section with a couple of natural steps — it’s the most rugged part but manageable for groups.

SATURDAY 21ST MARCH - SELLA - CAMI DE COLERA ( THE CHOLERA WALK ) - MODERATE - 10 KMS , 300 METRES ASCENT. 10:30 AM
The most significant cholera outbreak in Sella occurred in 1885, lasting 19 days, resulting in 18 deaths and 45 serious infections.
This event led to the creation of an alternative route to bypass the village, now known as “The Cholera Walk,” which remains a popular hiking trail today.
Also known as the Sella River Walk.
We have done this before as and have now added an extension from the Big Fig Tree back to the village ending with drinks at a bar with a terrace overlooking the valley.
The village of Sella is on the CV- 770 - 15 minutes north of the N-332 / Villajoyosa. We will park up in the layby on the left just before the bridge that leads into the village.
