Spring, Vision & the Eyes 🌸👁

In this season of spring, we connect with the Wood element, a time of growth, vision, and renewal. In traditional theory, the liver governs the eyes, inviting us to care for how we see, both physically but also inwardly.

In this week’s practice, we’ll bring gentle awareness to the eyes through focus (Drishti) and simple exercises to soothe and refresh them, especially helpful if they’ve been tired or strained.

I hope you can join me.

Wee reminder that there are no classes this week. But all the spring yin and flow recordings you’ve received over last three weeks will still work. So plenty of movement to keep the sides of the body open and flexible. Look forward to seeing you back on the mat next Wednesday 15th April

We’re exploring Wood energy, working the Liver & Gall Bladder meridians through the sides of the body and inner legs.

Wood grows in any direction, adaptable, creative, always reaching for the light. When balanced, it’s strong yet flexible. When not, it can feel stuck and rigid.

Notice your own flexibility, in body and energy. Honour what you need, and remember, gentle movement can support the shift between seasons.

Above all, do what feels good ✨

After a long winter, a sunny saturday in Edinburgh felt like a real shift — more light, more movement, and the first signs of spring emerging.

In class, we’re beginning to explore the Wood element, working with the Liver and Gall Bladder meridians through twists, side bends and flowing movement. These pathways support flexibility, balance and the smooth flow of energy through the body.

A gentle way to wake things up again and create a little more space, inside and out.

If you’d like to join us, you’re very welcome 💚

Transitioning into spring can feel frustrating, the calendar says we’re close, but it still feels like winter. In nature, though, this slow shift is completely normal. The energy is changing, even if we can’t fully feel it yet.

The Spring Equinox (March 20) marks a moment of balance between light and dark, with longer, brighter days ahead. The light is coming.

In practice, we begin to embrace the Wood element with gentle twists and side bends, slowly awakening the body and inviting fresh, new energy, just like the first shoots rising through the soil. 🌱

It’s March 👏 and there’s definitely a shift happening in nature. Bulbs are pushing through the soil, shrubs are beginning to show new growth, and energy is starting to rise again.

After travelling across multiple time zones, I’ve been working with a Body Clock (time-of-day) practice to help reset my system and recover from jet lag. It’s a wonderful way to bring the body back into rhythm.

In this practice, we move through each meridian pair using specific postures that encourage the smooth flow of energy, alongside simple words or intentions to support a positive mindset.

It’s a powerful and deeply balancing practice, especially at this time of seasonal transition, and one not to miss.

This is the last week of winter practice with all classes running.

In this week’s flow, we’ll focus on fluid, flowing movements, working with the spine and hips, alongside some gentle, watery qigong forms. Settling into a few longer holds to support natural mobility, encourage energy flow through the meridians, and blend meditation with posture.

Using the five elements to help find balance

Through yoga, we become more aware of how balance and imbalance feel within the body, mind, and spirit. The five element theory offers a helpful way to observe and understand these relationships within us.

In the mother/child (Shen) cycle, around the clock face. Metal supports Water, and Water supports Wood, reminding us that growth is continuous and interconnected. If one element is weakened, it affects those it nourishes.

In the control (Ko) cycle, across the clock face. Water is balanced by Earth and Fire is balanced by Water. Too much or too little of any element can lead to imbalance.

Ultimately, what we seek is balance among all five elements. Nothing is right or wrong, instead, we learn to notice what imbalance feels like and use the tools of our practice; posture, breath, and intention, to support or harmonise what’s needed.

Setting a Sankalpa

At this time of year, I like to introduce a Sankalpa at the beginning and/or end of our practice. A Sankalpa is a simple, positive intention that plants a seed in the subconscious, allowing change to unfold gently over time, making it especially suited to winter practice. It’s usually a short phrase, repeated in the same wording each time, acting like a stepping stone toward meaningful change.

In this practice, we continue with our watery theme; opening the joints, using gentle qigong to support the Kidney and Bladder channels, and finding stillness through longer holds. I hope this practice brings balance, inner peace, and a sense of connection to a deep inner source of energy.

The Water Element

At this time of year, our practice works with the water element. Water offers many teachings; it’s adaptable, powerful, and resilient, yet also gentle, still, and deeply calming. It reminds us of depth, mystery, and the wisdom of waiting until the right moment, like a bulb quietly gathering strength before emerging into the light.

As I write this on what’s often called “Blue Monday,” I hope to inspire you to join me on the mat as we explore inner strength, courage, and renewed enthusiasm for life. Working with the Kidney and Bladder channels can feel like igniting an inner pilot light, restoring vitality and helping us to thrive 🤗

“When the Kidney energy is revitalised, you’ll feel vibrant.”

Introducing the Bladder and Kidney meridian
The bladder meridian, the longest meridian with the most acupoints, runs down the back of the body, while the kidney meridian travels up the front. Together, they support the central channel, influencing the spine, nervous system, major glands, and our overall energy flow.

Through movement and posture, we strengthen these meridians by gently contracting and stretching along their pathways to circulate and tonify energy. Forward folds and backbends are especially effective in stimulating these channels.

This week’s practice begins to explore these powerful meridians, working to support our inner strength and vitality, leaving you feeling relaxed and restored. I hope you can join me, either in person, online or by a recording.

Seasons greetings and health and happiness for 2026. Just back from some hill walking in a snowy Tenerife. Glad to have the shortest day behind us, looking forward to this yin time of year but gradual increasing light. Love to all.
