The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared mpox a global public health emergency for the second time in two years, following an outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo 🇨🇩 that has spread to neighboring countries.

⚠️ The current outbreak is concerning due to the emergence of a new clade of the virus, which appears to spread more easily through routine close contact, including sexual contact.

💰 WHO has released $1.5 million in contingency funds to combat the outbreak, with an initial response plan requiring $15 million.

💡 Stay informed and follow public health guidelines to help prevent the spread of mpox. Together, we can fight the spread of mpox!

In December 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported two significant health events:

1️⃣Oropouche Virus Disease in the Americas: New cases were confirmed in Ecuador, Guyana, Panama, and the Cayman Islands. Oropouche virus is transmitted primarily through biting midges and can cause symptoms like fever, headache, and muscle pain. While typically non-fatal, it can lead to outbreaks in urban settings.

2️⃣Undiagnosed Disease in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC): Between 24 October and 5 December 2024, the Panzi health zone in Kwango Province reported 406 cases of an undiagnosed disease presenting with fever, headache, cough, runny nose, and body aches. All severe cases were reported to be severely malnourished, and 31 deaths have been registered. The majority of cases are among children, particularly those under five years old. Investigations are ongoing to identify the cause of the illness.

These developments underscore the importance of robust surveillance and prompt response to emerging health threats.
