"The freedom of thought allowed by the Buddha is unheard of elsewhere in the history of religions. This freedom is necessary because, according to the Buddha, man's emancipation depends on his own realization of Truth, and not on the benevolent grace or a god or any external power as a reward for his obedient good behaviour." - excerpt from the book "what the Buddha taught" by Walpola Rahula
I just recovered this book as it was whispering to me to pick it up from the bookshelf the other day. Excellent book! I highly recommend it.
I love this little except and it is one of the main reasons I love Buddhism. It helps us find the tools to find the truth within. It just teaches us, or better reminds us (we already know. We have actually known all along), of the truth, of how things are.
So often I mention the words that the Buddha would say at the end of a sermon, at the end of a teaching session: "And now, from everything that I just shared, don't believe any of it but go find out if it is true for yourself!". So empowering!
I am sure many of you are finding out many truths, many teachings through this quarantine. It is really so similar to being on retreat. I hope you are able to surrender to the lessons that it holds.
With love and delight.
Have a beautiful day,
Rebeca
