Response Art as Research / Placement of Self as an art therapist has been an on-going interest that started during my graduate students when I wrote my master thesis on “Response Art through Visual Journaling for the Art Therapist in Training.”
Flash forward 8+ years, response art has become central to my artistic practice, particularly when I was awarded opportunities to work in Europe. Collaborating with art therapists, creative practitioners, organizations, and art spaces from other countries has shifted my focus to international art therapy practice and the position of art therapy as a field within the global landscape of arts in mental healthcare. “Placement of Self” is what I started to use as a way to describe my understanding of artist and therapist as an American working in cross-cultural contexts. This includes ethical considerations, limitations, and opportunities for professional growth, idea exchange, and much more.
Here are select slides about this topic from a recent talk I have . During this talk, I discussed what art therapy is, common myths and assumptions, projects examples, founding , and intentions for my month as the artist-in-residence at Studija in addition to launching the first Art Therapy Lab International Residency.
Thank you to all that have followed my work and artist-therapist-human being journey. I also want to send my deep appreciation to all that have supported the Art Therapy Lab vision as we grow and your continued curiosity to work with us.
