🎓 Defensa de Tesis Doctoral sobre Fisioterapia Manual en Fibromialgia
El pasado miércoles 25 de junio, en el campus de Villaviciosa de Odón (Madrid), la nueva Doctora, Dña. Elena Cabezas Yagüe, defendió con brillantez su tesis doctoral:
📘 “Análisis comparativo de la eficacia de la Terapia Miofascial y la Terapia mediante Movilizaciones Articulares según el Concepto Maitland en el manejo del dolor y la severidad de los síntomas en mujeres con Fibromialgia”, dirigida por el Dr. Eleuterio A. Sánchez Romero, en el seno del Grupo de Investigación Interdisciplinar en Desórdenes Musculoesqueléticos.
🔍 Este ensayo clínico cuasi-aleatorizado con seguimiento a 3 meses aporta evidencia de alta calidad sobre la eficacia de las técnicas de terapia manual en la fibromialgia. Ambas intervenciones —la terapia miofascial y las movilizaciones articulares tipo Maitland— lograron mejoras clínicas significativas en el dolor, la disfunción y la percepción de salud. Destacó la mayor efectividad de la terapia miofascial en variables relacionadas con la salud general y la función física.
👨‍🔬 Esta investigación ha contado con la valiosa colaboración científica del Dr. Oliver Martínez Pozas y del Dr. Nicolás Cuenca-Zaldívar, a quienes expresamos nuestro más sincero agradecimiento por su implicación y contribuciones metodológicas a lo largo del estudio.

🧠🔍 New Perspectives in Temporomandibular Imaging: A Hands-On Ultrasound Workshop
I’m honored to have led a 4-hour workshop this morning at the 6th Sociedade Portuguesa de Disfunção Temporomandibular, Dor Orofacial e Sono (SPDOF) Congress – 10 Years of (Pro)Activity, held in Coimbra 🇵🇹, focused on the use of craniofacial and temporomandibular ultrasound in clinical practice.
With a fantastic and engaged group of multidisciplinary professionals, we explored:
✅ The fundamentals of ultrasound applied to the temporomandibular and craniofacial region
✅ Real-time image acquisition of the TMJ, masticatory and cervical muscles
✅ The identification of intra-articular pathologies (e.g., disc displacements)
✅ The relevance of muscle thickness and condylar mobility in TMD evaluation
✅ Clinical case discussions and live demonstration
This workshop aimed to empower clinicians to integrate ultrasound into their everyday decision-making and TMD assessment, improving diagnostic precision while fostering safer, patient-centered care.
🎯 Special thanks to the Sociedade Portuguesa de Disfunção Temporomandibular, Dor Orofacial e Sono (SPDOF) organizing committee for their warm hospitality and trust.
This Saturday, I’ll also be giving a plenary lecture on joint-related TMDs and the evolving role of physiotherapy within multidisciplinary pain care.

🎓 Congratulations to Dr. Oliver Martínez Pozas on His Doctoral Defense! 🎓
Today, March 19, at the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, I had the honor of witnessing the successful defense of the doctoral thesis of Dr. Oliver Martínez Pozas, titled:
🔹 “Effectiveness of Orthopedic Manual Therapy on Endogenous Pain Modulation Systems in Patients with Chronic Low Back Pain”
As his doctoral advisor, alongside co-directors Dr. Héctor Beltrán Alacreu and Dr. Josué Fernández Carnero, I am incredibly proud of the dedication, scientific rigor, and contributions that Dr. Martínez Pozas has made to the field of pain management and musculoskeletal therapy.
🧠 Key Contributions of This Research:
Chronic low back pain is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide, and while orthopedic manual therapy is widely used as a treatment, its precise effects on pain modulation mechanisms remain unclear. This thesis provides valuable insights through a meta-metaanalysis, a randomized clinical trial, and a cross-sectional study, evaluating the relationship between manual therapy and endogenous pain modulation.
