EFP leads the global conversation on periodontology, brings together 45 national scientific societies.

Bringing together 43 national scientific societies of periodontology from six continents, with around 18,000 periodontists and oral health professionals, the EFP (European Federation of Periodontology) is the force behind the following initiatives:

- Gum Health Day, major global awareness initiative to raise visibility of gum health and gum disease;

Officially introduced at EuroPerio11 in Vienna, the EFP Probe is designed to help clinicians diagnose and treat periodontal disease in accordance with the current classification and S3-level clinical practice guidelines.

It includes 14 durable measurement bands (1–15 mm, skipping 2 mm) designed for clarity and long-term accuracy, and was engineered to support both screening and detailed periodontal charting without requiring multiple instruments.

By connecting scientific rigour with everyday usability, the EFP Probe helps clinicians deliver periodontal care that is precise, standardised, and fully aligned with the EFP guidelines.

The EFP Probe was designed to help clinicians apply periodontal classification and clinical practice guidelines directly at the chairside.

The probe not only integrates screening and treatment into a single instrument, but also facilitates determining—based on the EFP guidelines—whether a situation is healthy, requires non-surgical therapy, or may need surgical treatment. At the same time, it functions as a full periodontal probe, featuring a ball tip that assists in assessing overhangs and plaque-retentive factors.

Can a digital companion help patients stick to their periodontal treatment?

A new qualitative study explored why patients struggle to stay consistent with their periodontal therapy — and how technology could support them.

Researchers found that barriers include limited awareness, time, and knowledge about oral health. Patients said a digital health companion could help by offering personalised education, progress tracking, reminders, and motivation for daily care.

The study highlights how innovation and behaviour change can work together to improve long-term oral health outcomes.

Which emergence profile is best for implant-supported crowns in the aesthetic zone?

The latest JCP Digest explores how concave vs. convex emergence profiles can impact soft-tissue stability, aesthetics and long-term outcomes of implant-supported restorations in the aesthetic zone.

Key findings show that convex profiles are linked to a higher risk of mid-facial mucosal recession, while concave designs may help preserve soft tissue stability.

There is solid evidence of an association between periodontitis and erectile dysfunction and some evidence that the relationship is causal. Furthermore, studies have shown that periodontal treatment can have a positive effect on reducing the severity of erectile dysfunction, although more research is needed. James Deschner (chair, EFP scientific affairs committee) and Lisa Hezel (member, EFP communication and engagement committee) weigh up the evidence and highlight other aspects of gum health related to men.

Can gum health be passed from parents to children?

A new study explored how parental periodontitis may influence not only the oral, but also the gut microbiome — in both parents and their children.

Findings revealed shared microbiome patterns and elevated systemic markers, suggesting a possible oral–gut microbial connection that links family gum health to overall wellbeing.

Healthy gums might mean more than a healthy smile, they could shape systemic health across generations.
