🔬 The first Spanish Conference on Genomic Medicine has become a reality! Held in Madrid on May 23-24, 2024, the event brought together 278 international experts to discuss the current state and future prospects of genomic medicine in the Spanish-speaking world. From rare diseases to artificial intelligence and commercial development, the conference covered key topics for implementing personalized medicine in healthcare systems.

🌍 One major highlight was the need to close gaps in our understanding of genomic variants, a challenge that new technologies like long-read sequencing can help address. Ethical and legal challenges, such as privacy and equity, were also a key part of the discussions, essential for advancing genomic medicine in Spanish-speaking countries.

Hi everyone, just wanted to share some exciting news! In 3 weeks, I’ll be heading to the Amazon with a film crew to visit some remote indigenous communities. We’re going there to study their unique genetic adaptations, which we hope to translate into precision medicine tailored to their needs. This is a significant step in addressing the genomics research inequities in Latin America. I’ll be out of touch during the second half of September, so do let me know if you need anything before then!
