What an incredible week in Rotterdam at SECEC 2025, this one will stay with me for a long time! I’m genuinely proud to represent Romania as its first National Delegate to SECEC, marking a huge milestone for both our country and the Romanian Elbow and Shoulder Society.

An unforgettable moment for me was moderating the “Shoulder Mix” session on Thursday, 18 September, alongside Okke Lambers-Heerspink. It was great to be so actively involved in SECEC activities and to contribute to such a vibrant international program.

Another highlight for me was passing the inaugural SECEC Certificate examination in shoulder and elbow surgery, joining the first group of surgeons in Europe to receive this credential. It’s a privilege to be part of something pioneering in our field.

Many thanks to President Roger van Riet for the invitation to the President’s Dinner. It was an extraordinary evening spent in conversation with legends Christian Ge**er and Greg Hoy. Their wisdom, humility, and passion for shoulder surgery continue to inspire me.

It was wonderful to see Romanian shoulder surgeons present, engaged, and passionate at such a high level. A reminder of the talent and drive within our community. I’m excited for what’s ahead and eager to help our Romanian group grow even stronger.

Save the date! I warmly invite all colleagues and friends to join us at SRUC 2025 on 3–4 October at the Sheraton Hotel in Bucharest. Let’s keep building this fantastic community together!

Looking forward to the future, onward and upward!

The Romanian Shoulder and Elbow Society (SRUC) is a non-profit society made up of orthopedic surgeons specialized in or with a special interest in shoulder and elbow surgery.

We are dedicated to the highest quality orthopedic surgery and we aim to contribute to the development of arthroscopic and minimally invasive surgery for the benefit of Romanian patients. We want to bring upper limb surgery in Romania up to European and international standards.

The annual SRUC congress aims to serve as a forum where doctors interested in this field can chat, exchange ideas and experience and present the results of their research in shoulder and elbow surgery.

will take place on October 3-4, 2025 at the Sheraton Hotel, Bucharest

At HC Marbella International Hospital I use minimally-invasive, state-of-the-art arthroscopic techniques to treat challenging upper limb conditions such as rotator cuff disease, shoulder instability, wrist ligament repair or joint stiffness.

The Ulnar Collateral Ligament Repair (also known in the USA as the Tommy John surgery*) is a procedure designed to restore stability of the elbow after severe injuries of the medial collateral ligament.

We usually perform this procedure on athletes involved in overhead or throwing activities.

* Tommy John was a baseball pitcher and he was the first patient to undergo it and successfully return to his sport, in 1974.

Tendons and ligaments connect muscles to bone, making it possible for you to walk, jump, lift and move. Once injured, tendons and ligaments do not heal easily because they naturally have poor blood supply, particularly where they connect to bone. As a result, the tendons and ligaments become weak and the muscles become over-taxed causing chronic pain, weakness and further damage.

Common treatment options include: rest, anti-inflammatory medicines, physical therapy, bracing and even corticosteroid injections. For some patients, though, these treatment options are not enough and do not provide long-term relief.

ℹ Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy is treatment that accelerates the way patients heal from chronic problems with tendons, ligaments and muscles.

🔹 The Power of Platelets

Blood contains platelets and fibrinogen, which play a crucial role in blood clotting and also carry certain growth factors that promote wound healing. PRP is derived from your own blood, which has been processed to concentrate the platelets.

When injected into the injured site, these concentrated platelets contain powerful growth factors that can jumpstart the healing of injured tendons and ligaments by stimulating tissue repair and regeneration. Common conditions that can be treated with PRP include tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, Achilles injuries, and partial rotator cuff tears.

Acromioclavicular dislocation is a traumatic injury caused by a tear of the stabilizing joint structures: the acromioclavicular and coracoclavicular ligaments and the joint capsule.

The acromial end of the clavicle rises to a level above the acromion causing an obvious deformity and the injured arm drops.

This injury is typically caused by falls on the shoulder in sports such as cycling or motor sports (bikes). It is also commonly seen on the football pitch.

For decades, steroid injections have been part of the standard of care for inflammation around tissue injuries. The goal of these injections is to reduce inflammation, allowing the body to heal the pain as best as possible.

Many studies showed good effects in reducing pain and restoring movement however results vary from one patient to another.

✔ Cortisone is a synthetic version of a natural hormone produced by the human body.

✔ Steroids will not cure your condition, but they’re very good at reducing inflammation and will ease symptoms such as swelling, pain and stiffness.

✔ Corticosteroids are commonly used for subacromial impingement, bursitis, rotator cuff injuries, frozen shoulder, arthritis, tennis/golfers’ elbow, carpal tunnel, trigger finger and de Quervain syndrome.

Did you know... De Quervain's tenosynovitis is more common in women than in men and tends to occur after the age of 40?

✔ it is a painful condition that affects the tendons on the thumb side of your wrist. Movements of the wrist and thumb become painful especially with forceful grasping or twisting.
✔ patients with hobbies or jobs that involve repetitive hand and wrist motions are at risk for developing the condition
✔ people with previous wrist injuries can develop it too
✔ patients suffering from arthritis are more prone to suffer from De Quervain's tenosynovitis

Today we are going to talk about abnormal scapulo-thoracic movement and the options available for diagnosis & efficient treatment:

🔹 Diagnosis

☑ Physical Examination: A thorough physical examination by a healthcare professional, including assessing scapular movement patterns, muscle strength, and joint mobility, can aid in diagnosis.
☑ Imaging: X-rays, MRI scans, or CT scans may be used to evaluate the bony structures and identify any structural abnormalities.

🔹 Treatment

☑ Physical Therapy: Targeted exercises and stretches prescribed by a physical therapist can help restore proper scapular movement and improve muscle imbalances.
☑ Manual Therapy: Techniques such as soft tissue mobilization, joint mobilization, and myofascial release can address tight or restricted muscles contributing to abnormal scapular motion.
☑ Surgery: In severe cases where conservative measures fail, surgical options, including scapular stabilization procedures or arthroscopic interventions, may be considered.
