Acromioclavicular dislocation is a traumatic injury caused by a tear of the stabilizing joint structures: the acromioclavicular and coracoclavicular ligaments and the joint capsule.

The acromial end of the clavicle rises to a level above the acromion causing an obvious deformity and the injured arm drops.

This injury is typically caused by falls on the shoulder in sports such as cycling or motor sports (bikes). It is also commonly seen on the football pitch.

For decades, steroid injections have been part of the standard of care for inflammation around tissue injuries. The goal of these injections is to reduce inflammation, allowing the body to heal the pain as best as possible.

Many studies showed good effects in reducing pain and restoring movement however results vary from one patient to another.

✔ Cortisone is a synthetic version of a natural hormone produced by the human body.

✔ Steroids will not cure your condition, but they’re very good at reducing inflammation and will ease symptoms such as swelling, pain and stiffness.

✔ Corticosteroids are commonly used for subacromial impingement, bursitis, rotator cuff injuries, frozen shoulder, arthritis, tennis/golfers’ elbow, carpal tunnel, trigger finger and de Quervain syndrome.

Did you know... De Quervain's tenosynovitis is more common in women than in men and tends to occur after the age of 40?

✔ it is a painful condition that affects the tendons on the thumb side of your wrist. Movements of the wrist and thumb become painful especially with forceful grasping or twisting.
✔ patients with hobbies or jobs that involve repetitive hand and wrist motions are at risk for developing the condition
✔ people with previous wrist injuries can develop it too
✔ patients suffering from arthritis are more prone to suffer from De Quervain's tenosynovitis

Today we are going to talk about abnormal scapulo-thoracic movement and the options available for diagnosis & efficient treatment:

🔹 Diagnosis

☑ Physical Examination: A thorough physical examination by a healthcare professional, including assessing scapular movement patterns, muscle strength, and joint mobility, can aid in diagnosis.
☑ Imaging: X-rays, MRI scans, or CT scans may be used to evaluate the bony structures and identify any structural abnormalities.

🔹 Treatment

☑ Physical Therapy: Targeted exercises and stretches prescribed by a physical therapist can help restore proper scapular movement and improve muscle imbalances.
☑ Manual Therapy: Techniques such as soft tissue mobilization, joint mobilization, and myofascial release can address tight or restricted muscles contributing to abnormal scapular motion.
☑ Surgery: In severe cases where conservative measures fail, surgical options, including scapular stabilization procedures or arthroscopic interventions, may be considered.

If you're a golf lover, professional or amateur, and you've sustained an injury, you might be afraid that you'll never be able to practice the sport again after surgery.

You will be happy to know that over 70 % of patients who undergo total shoulder replacement return to playing golf after surgery. Most people return to golf soon after rotator cuff or tennis elbow surgery.

I routinely performs complex surgical procedures to treat shoulder, elbow and wrist pathologies and can help you return to practicing your favorite sport in the shortest time possible.

Navigated shoulder replacement: cutting edge technology allows more accuracy than ever and excellent results for our patients.
In order to have this surgery we will require a computer tomography or TAC scan that will allow us to plan the procedure and to use a computer software to predict the amount of movement the patient will have after the surgery.

Trigger finger is a condition in which one or more of your fingers may be difficult to bend or gets stuck in a bent position. The condition it is also known as stenosing tenosynovitis. It occurs when the flexor tendon can no longer slide easily under the A1 pulley at the base of the finger causing pain and locking.

🔹 What are the causes of trigger finger?

The flexor tendons are long cord-like structures that attach the muscles of the forearm to the bones of the fingers. When the muscles contract, the flexor tendons allow the fingers to bend.

Trigger finger is caused by inflammation of the tendon sheath (tenosynovium) that covers the tendons. Along the tendon sheath, bands of tissue called “pulleys” hold the flexor tendons on the bone and prevent bowing. In trigger finger the A1 pulley at the base of the finger becomes inflamed and thickened making the gliding of the tendon difficult. The tendon may develop a nodule that clicks when it goes under the pulley.
