WINGED SCAPULA: “The Floating Shoulder Blade”
Often mistaken for a minor postural issue, it can be an early indicator of long thoracic nerve palsy, serratus anterior dysfunction, or deeper neuromuscular imbalance.
🧠 When the scapula detaches from the thoracic wall, the entire shoulder girdle loses stability , affecting functional movement, scapulohumeral rhythm, and rehabilitation outcomes.
🔍 Clinical Insight:
Visual observation alone isn’t enough. A thorough assessment using electromyography (EMG), nerve conduction studies, and functional movement screening is crucial to uncover the root cause : whether neurogenic, traumatic, or idiopathic.
💡 Don’t just treat symptoms. Understand the system.
Recognizing scapular dyskinesis early can prevent chronic pain, compensation, and failed rehab strategies.
