PINGUECULA
Below is an image of a clinical condition called "Pinguecula". As you can see there is a yellowish and slightly raised area to the side of the cornea. Most commonly they are found in the 3 and 9 O`clock position of the eye.

Clinical definition: Degenerative sub-epithelial collagen often associated with hot, dry climates and over exposure to UV, often compounded with excessive computer use.

Symptoms: Most common symptoms are dry and itchy eyes.

Management: As you can imagine, in this sunny climate, we get asked this question on a regular basis.
We see Pinguecula almost every day when carrying out eye examinations.
The advice would be to make sure you are wearing good quality sunglasses as U.V levels are very high on The Costa del Sol.
In many cases it is important that you keep the eyes well lubricated with a good wetting drop; we recommend a range of wetting drops called "Systane" as they are most effective.
It is also important to remain hydrated.

Once pinguecula occurs it can only be managed as described above so the best cause of action is prevention!

With any eye irritation it is always recommended to see an eye care professional
