🌿💚 Andalucía Day – Saturday 28 February 💚🌿
This Saturday is Día de Andalucía, a public holiday across the region.
It is an opportune moment to understand a little more about the history and culture of the place many of us visit or live in, whether full time or part time.
A few interesting facts...
*** On 28 February 1980, Andalucía held a referendum and voted to become an autonomous community of Spain. It was an important milestone in modern Spanish history and regional identity.
*** The Andalusian flag is green and white. Green represents hope and the land. White represents peace. You will probably see it on balconies, public buildings and schools this week.
*** The official anthem was written by Blas Infante, who is often referred to as the father of Andalusian nationalism. It is sung in schools and at official events on this day.
*** Andalucía has been shaped by many civilisations over the centuries, including Phoenicians, Romans, and Moors. That layered history is part of why the architecture, food and traditions are so distinctive.
*** Here in Mijas Pueblo, we are lucky to enjoy one of the classic pueblos blancos. The whitewashed houses were traditionally painted with lime to reflect the sun and help keep homes cool. The village sits around 400 metres above sea level, which explains the incredible coastal views.
*** Mijas also has deep historical roots, with narrow streets that still reflect its Moorish past, and landmarks such as the Ermita de la Virgen de la Peña and the old town squares that give it so much character.
Whether you have lived here for years or have recently arrived, Andalucía Day is a lovely excuse to appreciate the history and culture around us.
Feliz Día de Andalucía to everyone celebrating!
