We’ve all been there: lying in bed, the mind buzzing, replaying the day, the year, the list of things we haven’t done.

The trick isn’t to stop thinking. That usually backfires. It’s to redirect gently, noticing your breath, where you sit and how your body feels, gently noting the sounds around you... and let the loop loosen its grip. Even a tiny pause can feel like a small exhale for the whole nervous system.

Honestly. Just a few moments of attention can unstick the mind, lower tension, and let you feel lighter.

✨ We host retreats throughout the year to help you rest, restore and reconnect. Our next two winter retreats are Christmas and New Year. Find out more via the link in bio.

Here’s a wild fact: hiking changes your brain. Literally.

When you move in nature - breathing, stepping, noticing the world around you - your amygdala (the bit that triggers stress) calms down, your prefrontal cortex wakes up, and cortisol levels drop. That’s why after a hike you feel lighter, clearer, a little giddily alive.

Even better: doing it in a group rewires habits. You don’t have to motivate yourself alone. You join the rhythm, your brain latches onto the flow, and suddenly your nervous system remembers how good it feels to move, breathe, and focus outward instead of spiraling inward.

It’s science, but it’s also joyful: mountains, sunlight, fresh air, friends beside you, and a little eagle overhead. Your brain gets a workout and a spa day in one.

✨ Our Christmas and New Year retreats include these guided hikes. This is the perfect way to reset both body and mind. Find out more via the link in bio.

Walking together through olive groves, along mule trails, up to the mountains… there’s a gentle yet powerful connection that happens amongst our guests on these hikes. Whether with each other, or themselves.

The hikes around the Alpujarras are no mean feat. They require your attention. They demand it. In turn, the landscape offers hills and mountains as far as the eye can see, a splashing stream, native trees and bushes. There’s the cowbells ringing as the cattle impossibly moves up and down the steep hills. And the white walls of the houses and churches of villages perched atop the mountains. The landscape is truly breathtaking and we are incredibly lucky to call it home and be able to share it with you. And what magic – the fact it heals us all, just by allowing ourselves to experience it.

✨ Our next winter retreats — Christmas and New Year — include these guided hikes, with plenty of space to move, notice, and connect. Find out more via the link in bio.

🌙 For the nights when sleep won’t come

If you didn’t sleep well last night, you’re not alone. This time of year has a way of stirring things up. There’s unfinished plans, unspoken worries, sometimes even the sense that time is moving too fast. You climb into bed exhausted, but your mind starts its midnight marathon. Sometimes you don’t even notice that your mind is going wild until you realise you hit the pillow ages ago – so why are you still not asleep yet? And why on earth are you thinking about your to-do for tomorrow or re-living what you said earlier today?

At Kaliyoga, we see it all the time. Guests arrive tired in ways that go beyond the body. But here’s the thing: rest doesn’t always start with sleep. It starts with slowing down enough to feel safe again.

That’s why we love this simple 3-minute bedtime ritual to help you ground, unwind and invite the body to rest. It’s a reminder that you don’t have to fix everything tonight. You just have to soften enough to begin again tomorrow.

One of the unexpected joys of our winter retreats is getting back out on the mountain trails. In the heat of summer, the Alpujarras are much too hot to hike. But in winter the air is cool and clear, the paths quiet except for the sound of our boots on stone.

Our guide take our guests guided walks through the olive groves, along ancient mule trails, and into the mountains where you can see the snow on the Sierra Nevada peaks. It’s part exercise but also part meditation. This kind of movement allows us to be present, always looking where we’re going and stopping to take in our surroundings. Bit of a clichè but it is grounding and mindful. It might sound a bit contrived but the level of energy you put into these hikes has an intensely calming effect on the mind.

There’s something about being in nature at this time of year that feels like a homecoming. You slow down, breathe deeply, and remember what space feels like again.

Neuroscientists today know that our gut is more than a digestion machine, it’s a tiny universe of nerves, bacteria, and chemical signals that talk directly to your brain. They call it the “second brain,” and for good reason: moods, cravings, energy, and even stress can all be traced back to it.

At Kaliyoga, we notice it all the time. Guests often arrive feeling anxious, flat, or just “off.” By the end of the week after the nourishing meals, movement and reflection there’s a visible change. Energy steadies, moods lift, and something subtle but profound seems to click into place. Your gut and your emotions are deeply connected, and when you give both care and attention, the effect is powerful.

You can taste when something’s been cooked with care. In our kitchen, we put a lot of care and thought, but also a ton of love. There’s always laughter, chopping, singing and the scent of herbs. Meals made here are about heart. Each dish is designed to comfort, heal and delight.

Guests often say it’s not just the food that nourishes them, but the feeling behind it. They often exclaim, ‘I didn’t know I had signed up for a food retreat!’

Sometimes the smallest things make the biggest difference. A few deep breaths before you rush into the next thing. Ten quiet minutes outside. A proper stretch. A glass of water you actually finish.

At Kaliyoga, we see all the time how small rituals of care create space for the bigger shifts. Our retreats are filled with these gentle pauses.

If today feels heavy, try one of these tiny things. They might just make the day feel a little softer around the edges.

There’s something special about walking in these mountains in winter. The air is crisp, the light soft and honey-coloured, the horizon opening wide in every direction. And the sun, there’s always sun.

On our Christmas Retreat, we take guests along the ancient mule trails that wind through olive groves and almond trees, and up to the Buddhist monastery of O Sel Ling, where prayer flags flutter in the wind. We share a picnic there of simple food, animated conversations and views that stretch for miles and miles.

Something beautiful always happens on these walks. The mind quiets, the shoulders drop and you remember how good it feels to just be part of nature.

🏔️ Hiking Through the Town of Lanjarón

There’s something about walking through these tiny Andalusian villages that slows time down. Whitewashed walls, geraniums tumbling from balconies, the faint sound of water trickling through old stone fountains.

Every week at Kaliyoga, we take our guests hiking through Lanjarón and the Alpujarras. There’s the scent of wild herbs, the warmth of the sun, the stillness between conversations as guest notice a calf here, a Golden eagle there.

By the time we return for lunch, there’s a kind of effervescent joy that settles in. That feeling of being full; but from energy and beauty rather than food.

🌙 This is for those who hold their breath without realising.

At Kaliyoga we make space for you to gently reset. There are many quiet ways your nervous system whispers, enough. Week in and week out, we see our guests arrive tired, pushing through. There’s a visible change stepping through our threshold, when shoulders drop a little and there’s a subtle softening. Later, after the sound healing bath, something bigger shifts and theres a visible lifting of spirits.

At Kaliyoga, we do our best to help you remember how to listen to your body again. Through rest, movement, nature and stillness. We’re hoping that by sharing little tips like these, we can bring a little bit of Kaliyoga into your daily life.

Our Story

In 2002, two yoga teachers left their tepid London lives in search of a beautiful location to set up a yoga retreat. Driven by the shared values of yoga philosophy, they traveled to southern Spain where a friend had predicted a property in the Alpujarra region would be the right place. The friend’s name was Kali and the first property they arrived at was indeed the perfect location. In gratitude, Kaliyoga was founded. Some years later they opened a second Kaliyoga Retreat in Puglia, southern Italy.
