The benefits of bariatric surgery are greater ⬆ when the surgery is performed before the development of complications related to type 2 diabetes.
Why?
1. Higher likelihood of diabetes remission
Early intervention ⌛ reduces insulin resistance and preserves the function of the beta-cell in the pancreas (insulin producing cells).
2. Preventing disease complications
The development of complications is prevented or delayed by having early surgery. Importantly, these complications are irreversible once they have developed and include retinopathy (eyes), neuropathy (nerves), nephropathy (kidneys), heart disease ♥️♥️♥️ and strokes.
3. Early surgery leads to improved blood glucose control, lower medication requirements ⤵️ and reduced risk of cardiovascular events and death ☠
4. Earlier surgery often means patients are younger 👦👧 and have fewer co-morbidities; this lowers the perioperative risk. ☎️(868)289-3031

My personal health goals for 2025
1. Know my Numbers 🔢
This January I will ensure my health screening is performed. This includes having my BMI, blood pressure and labs recorded.
2. Focus on Nutrition 🥗
Eat more balanced meals with lean proteins, whole grains, healthy fats, and plenty of fruits and veggies. Unfortunately, my weakness has become sweet treats which I must limit. Will work on avoiding skipping meals.
3. Practice Portion Control 🍽️
I need to be more mindful of my portion sizes and paying attention to hunger and satiety cues.
4. Drink Water 💧
Sometimes thirst is mistaken for hunger. When I feel hungry, I will try drinking water first, before reaching for a snack.
5. Stay Active 🚶‍♀️
Over the last few years I have made a habit and hit a goal of exercising for 150 minutes per week. Many times this would be achieved after 2-3 sessions of cardio intensive exercise. This year I would like to attain a minimum of 30 minutes of intentional exercise 5 times per week.
6. Sleep 💤& Wake
I am not a morning person and do not enjoy waking up early, but this year I will try to wake 30-45 minutes earlier. This quiet time will be used to focus on goals, plan my day, stretch, and have a small healthy breakfast.

🏥✨ Did you know? A prolonged hospital stay after bariatric surgery is actually less common compared to many other frequently performed surgeries! Eg. Hysterectomy, incisional hernia repair, colon resection.
🌟 After bariatric surgery, the majority of patients are discharged home within 24hrs of the completion of surgery ⏰
While every surgery has its own recovery time, 📈 advancements in bariatric procedures and care mean most patients are on their feet and feeling better sooner.
