PART 2 - N'DOFANE

The hardest “no” is the most necessary one.

In N’Dofane, politics and bureaucracy tried to silence what mattered most: the voices of the community, the surveys, the data that can build tomorrow’s solutions.

We refused to be used as free labor without a future. And that meant leaving, between tears, embraces, and frustration... but also with deep respect for a community that welcomed us like family.

👉 This was not a success story. But it is a truth that needed to be told.

Follow us to keep walking together: through the good, the hard, and the real.

PART 1

We arrived in N’Dofane with open hearts and high hopes.

After more than a year of preparation, even traveling a month before to meet with local authorities... we believed everything was ready.

We had been clear: the Kanji Experience is not just free medical care. It is general checkups and surveys. Those surveys are what allow us to create reports, apply for funds, and build long-term solutions.

But on the very day of our intervention, the CNERS arrived and blocked the project. Not because the community didn’t want us, they were waiting with open arms, ready to participate. It was politics and bureaucracy that spoke louder than the people’s needs.

We were asked to provide free care only, without surveys, without data, without the possibility of future projects. That is not who we are. Kanji is self-managed, not hired. We do not play assistentialism.

Saying no was painful, frustrating, almost heartbreaking. But staying true to our mission mattered more than bowing to broken systems.

The community itself was wonderful. They welcomed us like family, with food, hospitality, and warmth. Leaving felt like leaving home, but this time, under tears and frustration.

👉 This is also part of the Kanji Experience: not a success story, but a necessary truth.

Follow us to see the whole story of Kanji Experience 2025: the good, the hard, and the real.

Real care goes beyond treatments. It begins with connection.

In this second reel, we opened space to share what’s often left unspoken: emotions, fears, and hopes.

Then we planted together. Literally. Because growing food is also growing future.

In both, we found something powerful: mental health is not separate from daily life. It lives in how we listen, how we work the land, and how we show up for each other.

We’re grateful to every hand, every voice, every soul that joined these moments.

💚 This is how we build healthcare; human, collective, rooted.

Stay tuned!

Special thanks to Lamin and Delfina for the passion and the love in each move.

Sometimes, the plans collapse.
And sometimes, something better takes shape.

Salagi wasn’t part of the original map.
But when we had to walk away from a project that didn’t align with our values,
this community opened its doors and their hearts.

Together with Lamin, a local educator and gardener,
and the neighborhood chief,
we organized something simple and powerful:

✅ Free health checkups
✅ Emotional wellbeing workshops
✅ Gardening activities with the children
✅ Honest connection

We listened. We worked. We learned.
And we were reminded that co-development only works when it's built on mutual respect.

🌍 Let’s keep building, one real connection at a time.
🎥 Welcome to Salagi — Kanji Experience 2025

Unlocking digital mental health in rural Africa

Mental health isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity. In West Africa’s remote communities, traditional access is limited, but innovation can change that.

In our latest blog, we explore how digital tools (think chatbots, tablets, telepsychiatry) are not just solutions, but pathways for co‑development. No buzzwords, just real possibilities: local language apps, empathic design, and community-led pilots in Tanka Tanka and rural Senegal.

We’re inviting tech creators, designers, developers, and human-centered innovators to join us in this journey. Because mental health deserves innovation rooted in empathy, context, and equality.

Kerewane France, Senegal. Kanji experience 2024.

Carros tirados por burros.
Niños al mando.
Calor seco, polvo, esfuerzo.

Healthcare in Gambia and Senegal: Challenges and Realities

Did you know that many rural communities in Gambia and Senegal face critical barriers to basic healthcare?

From a severe lack of medical professionals to poor infrastructure and limited access to facilities, the situation demands urgent attention.

In our latest blog post, we explore:

The human resource crisis in rural healthcare.

Transportation and infrastructure barriers.

Promising initiatives like the SHEGAS project to improve cross-border healthcare coordination.

How international partnerships are working to strengthen national health systems.

Understanding these realities is the first step toward building equitable and sustainable healthcare solutions in West Africa.

🎥 Kanji at Tanka Tanka - A first step

There are visits that stay with you.
Because they’re not just about being somewhere, they’re about what begins there.

Earlier this year, we knocked on the doors of Tanka Tanka, the only psychiatric hospital in The Gambia.
We went with respect, curiosity, and a quiet hope of building something that could matter.

We weren’t there to fix or to save.
We were there to meet, to share, to listen.

That day, ideas met reality. And from that meeting, a shared vision began to take shape.
It’s just the beginning.

🧠 Mental health matters. Community matters.
And co-development is how we walk forward—together.

In July, we return as part of Kanji Experience 2025.
To keep learning, to keep building. To keep showing up.

If this speaks to you, join us.

Kanji Experience 2025: We keep walking together.

This year, we're expanding our horizons, but keeping the same core essence: sharing, working, learning, and growing.

We're traveling to new rural communities in Senegal: N'Dofane and Firdausi, where we'll continue to prioritize listening and networking.

Also, we will have a part of the experience at Tanka Tanka, The Gambia's only psychiatric hospital, to keep learning side-by-side with its people.

We'll continue with psychosocial surveys, proposals from and for the community, and the creation of real, useful, and living reports.

There will also be time to rest, share good food, go to the beach, laugh, and truly connect.

What do we do? We study, propose, and work. But above all, we listen.

If this resonates with you, you can join us.

¡Ey, familia!
