Dr. Wubalem has been serving at St. Paul's Hospital Millennium Medical College-SPHMMC for the past six years as a radiologist and recently completed sub-speciality in radiology focusing on women's health.

RADscape Tele-radiology Ethiopia campaign “Getting the right image for my patient”

RADSCAPE launches a campaign week to promote the appropriate use of medical imaging, in collaboration with HERCA (Heads of the European radiological protection competent authorities).

On this National physicians’ week of March 2022, a Teleradiology campaign “Getting the right image for my patient” is launched in the 11 regions of the country. The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness on the appropriate use of medical radiological examinations. This campaign is addressed to medical doctors across the country who request radiological examinations for their patients in their daily practice. Radiological examinations have proven to be very effective for diagnosis and treatment in modern medicine. However, some of them like Radiograph, CT, Flouroscopy and Mammography may expose the patient to ionizing radiation that may cause a health detriment. In principle, a medical radiological examination should be of outweigh in benefit for the patient.

RADSCAPE has organized “action week” from March 25 – 31, 2022 focused on the inspection of the appropriateness of radiological examinations in radiology departments to highlighted the need to increase the awareness among professionals on the appropriate use of medical imaging

The basic campaign material is a set of seven key questions for the medical doctors when requesting a radiological examination aiming is to increase the awareness on available tools and provide knowledge which can help either to effectively choose the appropriate radiological examination for the patient or to choose an alternative way forward.

1. If I have already made a diagnosis, what is the added value of a radiological examination?
2. Should my patient have another radiological examination if one has been done recently?
3. Should I refer my patient for an X-ray or CT if another examination can be done that does not use ionizing radiation?
4. Is my patient aware that a CT is not without risk?
5. How can I ensure that my patient receives the most appropriate imaging examination?
6. Why is it important to ask if pregnancy is a possibility?
7. What should I consider before referring a child for an imaging examination?
