Urinary incontinence ? — the loss of bladder control — is a common problem which most people find embarrassing.
Urinary incontinence is when the normal process of storing and passing urine is disrupted. The severity ranges from occasionally leaking urine when you cough or sneeze to having an urge to urinate that's so sudden and strong you don't get to a toilet in time.
Causes
Urinary incontinence can be caused by everyday habits, underlying medical conditions or physical problems: including urinary tract infections, vaginal infection or irritation, or constipation. Some medications can cause bladder control problems that last a short time. When incontinence lasts longer, it may be due to:
-Weak bladder or pelvic floor muscles,
-Overactive bladder muscles
-Damage to nerves (such as in Diabetic patients, patients with Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis) & muscle and nerve injury due to surgery
-Pelvic organ prolapse
-Prostatitis, BPH, etc..
Types
Stress incontinence. Urine leaks when you exert pressure on your bladder by coughing, sneezing, laughing, exercising or lifting something heavy.
Urge incontinence. You have a sudden, intense urge to urinate followed by an involuntary loss of urine.
Overflow incontinence. You experience frequent or constant dribbling of urine due to a bladder that doesn't empty completely.
Mixed incontinence. You experience more than one type of urinary incontinence — most often this refers to a combination of stress incontinence and urge incontinence.
Complications
Skin problems: Rashes, skin infections and sores can develop from constantly wet skin.
Urinary tract infections: Incontinence increases your risk of repeated urinary tract infections.
Impacts on your personal life: Urinary incontinence can affect your social, work and personal relationships.
If urinary incontinence affects your daily activities, don't hesitate to see your doctor. For most people, simple lifestyle and dietary changes or medical care can treat symptoms of urinary incontinence.
