One of our graduates, Dahanay, returned home to Brave Hearts. This time she came to give back as a university graduate and working professional.

She shared her story with the children, spent time listening and laughing with them, and delivered a heartfelt message that stayed with all of us: where you start does not define where you can go.

Dahanay is living proof that with love, support, and perseverance, dreams are possible. Today, she stands as hope in action. She shows every child at Brave Hearts that their future is wide open. 🌱

Yesterday was a beautiful reminder of what it means to celebrate with purpose 🧑

Thank you to Selome and Ashenafi, who chose to celebrate their children Leul and Ezana’s birthdays by sharing the joy with our children at Brave Hearts. Though miles apart, their hearts were with the children.

They generously covered the food, drinks, and cake, making it a joyful day filled with smiles, laughter, and love.

Thank you for turning a birthday into a blessing.

Happiest of Birthdays to Leul and Ezana! May God bless you and your beautiful family πŸ™πŸ½

Meet Misrak

Misrak is a Grade 12 student shinining through her dedication and hard work. She recently achieved excellent academic results and remains deeply committed to her studies.

With the support of BHE, Misrak received prescription glasses that are helping her learn more comfortably and confidently. She maintains strong relationships with her teachers and peers, actively participates in our Saturday sessions, and consistently demonstrates outstanding academic performance.

Driven by compassion and ambition, Misrak dreams of becoming a psychiatrist, a goal that reflects her commitment to both learning and making a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

A big thank you to Chevy Chase Elementary School for the clothing donations we shared during our Annual Awards Ceremony. Seeing the children light up with joy reminded us how powerful simple acts of kindness can be.

We’re truly grateful to the Principal, Assistant Principal, staff, families, and students who made this possible, and a special thank you to Ms. Mimi and Ms. Quintana for going the extra mile. Your generosity and care mean so much to our children and our community.

Brave Hearts Annual Awards Ceremony

This Saturday didn’t feel like just another event. It felt like a room full of pride, tears, and joy.

As our children received awards for academic excellence, resilience, talent, and graduation into higher education, something beautiful happened, stories were shared and emotions spilled over. At one point, even our guests were in tears. Guardians danced. Some cried. Many did both.

We were honored to be joined by Konjit Yimer (Koni), the Founder and Director of BHE, our board members - Marta Borena, Artist Yosef Gebre (Jossy in The House), Mesfin Woldeyes, and our special guest artist Tsehaye Yohannes, whose words encouraged our children to keep aiming higher, no matter where they start.

We also distributed clothing generously donated by a school in the United States, a reminder that care and solidarity travel far.

The children kept singing and dancing long after the event ended. No one wanted the day to end.

To our major partner, Dean and Hanson Family Foundation, your generosity is the reason behind every smile.

To our awardees: your effort, resilience, and determination make us incredibly proud. This day was yours. 🧑

Celebrating Effort. Honoring Growth. Applauding Dreams. 🌟

On January 10th at 12:00 PM, Brave Hearts Ethiopia will be hosting our Annual Academic Achievement Award Ceremony, a day dedicated to celebrating the resilience, discipline, and determination of the children and youth we serve.

This is more than an award day.
It is a moment to recognize after school studying, consistent attendance, personal breakthroughs, and the quiet courage it takes to keep believing in one’s future, even when the journey isn’t easy.

Every certificate represents a story.
Every smile represents hope.
Every child honored represents what is possible when care, opportunity, and commitment come together.

We are proud of our learners and grateful to our supporters. We can’t wait to celebrate together. πŸ’›

Our Story - Changing Lives

Established in 2014, Brave Hearts Ethiopia is an NGO working to empower and improve the lives of orphan and vulnerable children (OVC), youth and their guardians in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. BHE supports families through a holistic care model including access to quality education, adequate nutrition, health care, counseling, training, micro finance and psychosocial support. These children and youth have often found themselves facing unthinkable situations and appalling hardships. Their guardians are usually their elderly grandparents or single mothers living in poverty that struggle to provide basic needs for the children under their care and themselves.

Vulnerable children and youth often thrive and succeed when provided with the opportunities they missed. BHE focuses on providing the children in the program access to quality education including covering school fees, providing them with school materials, uniforms and bags. The children receive tutorial lessons at the BHE drop in center along with after school healthy meals to re-energize for studying. At the drop in center, children and youth also are provided guidance and counseling as well as life skills training to support their psychosocial development.

BHE also works to ensure the child or youth has a secure and loving home to live in. We provide micro finance support through a revolving fund and training for guardians that can establish, run and grow their small business for sustainable livelihoods.

At BHE, we believe every child deserves full access to opportunities. BHE supports children with special needs have access to education and other services.
