Last Saturday, our children and youth participated in an interactive session on ‘Dreams and Future Goals’, facilitated by our social worker and volunteer, Rakeb. The objective was to boost their self-esteem and help them connect their present interests with future opportunities. They learned how to achieve their dreams through focus, hard work, and clear goal setting.

In one of our Saturday sessions Meseret beautifully said "Our future will be bright if we study hard and focus on our education with our faith in God."

His mom is the first receiptent of Brave Hearts income generation support. She has grown her small business from selling a few veggies at the 'Gulit' to market to expanding her business and selling injera.

ወድቆ መነሳት! Getting back up!

Last Saturday we talked about how our students can re-energize themselves even after failure. As Nelson Mandela said - "Do not judge me by my successes; judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again."

With guidance from our social worker, our children and youth learned about building resilience through result oriented goal setting, problem solving, building self confidence and emotional support. Our youth had a few drops of wisdom themselves.

“መፈራት ያለብን መውደቅን ሳይሆን አለመነሳትን ነው፤ ከጣርን ምንም ነገር ማሳካት እንችላለን።” - Melat

“አነደተራዳሁት መውድቅ መጨረሻ ሳይሆን አራሳችንን አንድናጠነክር የሚረዳን አድል ነው” - Abraham

This International Women’s Day, we celebrate the strength, courage, and determination of women in our program who transform challenges into opportunity. 💜

Tewabech and Yetemnge are two remarkable mothers who once struggled to support their families through irregular daily labor. After their children became part of Brave Hearts’ holistic support program, they were able to transform their livelihoods. Both became members of the microfinance association, Tiret Lefere Cooperative, supported by Brave Hearts. They gained access to training, community, and small business loans.

Tewabech started by selling vegetables at the Gulit market. Today, she has expanded her small business and started selling injera, steadily growing her income and building a more secure future for her child.

Yetemnge also was able to expand and improve her own small business selling charcoal, incense, and related items at the market, bringing stability and renewed hope to her family.

Their journeys remind us that when women are supported with opportunity and trust, they uplift not only their families but entire communities. 🌱

Last Saturday, we had an interactive and fun session with our older children on adolescence. We explored the physical, emotional, and social changes that come with growing up. 💬

The discussion was open, honest, and full of great questions, including how to manage emotional changes. Together, we talked about staying calm, speaking to trusted friends, thinking before reacting, and engaging in positive activities like reading, playing, and deep breathing.

We remain committed to creating safe spaces where children can learn, grow, and understand themselves with confidence. 🧡

Meet Blen 💛

Blen is 13 years old and in Grade 7. She is a bright, determined student who loves learning and always tries her best at school.

Life has brought some big changes for Blen, including moving away from her familiar community. Even so, she continues to stay engaged with her studies and still joins the Saturday learning sessions with the support of BraveHearts.

One thing Blen loves most is football ⚽ She enjoys playing and dreams of becoming a professional footballer one day. Her enthusiasm, focus, and hope remind us how powerful it is when a child is given encouragement and the chance to keep dreaming.

One of our graduates, Dahanay, returned home to Brave Hearts. This time she came to give back as a university graduate and working professional.

She shared her story with the children, spent time listening and laughing with them, and delivered a heartfelt message that stayed with all of us: where you start does not define where you can go.

Dahanay is living proof that with love, support, and perseverance, dreams are possible. Today, she stands as hope in action. She shows every child at Brave Hearts that their future is wide open. 🌱

Our Story - Changing Lives

Established in 2014, Brave Hearts Ethiopia is an NGO working to empower and improve the lives of orphan and vulnerable children (OVC), youth and their guardians in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. BHE supports families through a holistic care model including access to quality education, adequate nutrition, health care, counseling, training, micro finance and psychosocial support. These children and youth have often found themselves facing unthinkable situations and appalling hardships. Their guardians are usually their elderly grandparents or single mothers living in poverty that struggle to provide basic needs for the children under their care and themselves.

Vulnerable children and youth often thrive and succeed when provided with the opportunities they missed. BHE focuses on providing the children in the program access to quality education including covering school fees, providing them with school materials, uniforms and bags. The children receive tutorial lessons at the BHE drop in center along with after school healthy meals to re-energize for studying. At the drop in center, children and youth also are provided guidance and counseling as well as life skills training to support their psychosocial development.

BHE also works to ensure the child or youth has a secure and loving home to live in. We provide micro finance support through a revolving fund and training for guardians that can establish, run and grow their small business for sustainable livelihoods.

At BHE, we believe every child deserves full access to opportunities. BHE supports children with special needs have access to education and other services.
