Effective Listening and Critical Thinking Lessons! 🎧🧠

Last Saturday, our children enjoyed two fun and impactful sessions.

The younger group, led by our bright child Yabesera with support from our social worker, explored effective listening. In this session, we explored learning to follow instructions, retaining key information, asking better questions, and participating confidently in class.

Meanwhile, the older group dived into critical thinking, in a highly participatory session led by our social worker. Through discussions and games, they practiced analyzing information, questioning assumptions, recognizing biases, and making clear, logical, and independent choices.

It was a joyful day of fun, learning, and growth for all! πŸ’›

We were delighted to host Graham Dodds, his wife Fikir, and their three daughters, Adina, Leona, and Elsa, at our drop-in center on Friday. The children and staff gave them a warm welcome with a colorful greeting the kids had lovingly drawn.

During a traditional coffee ceremony, our older youth shared their academic progress and expressed heartfelt gratitude to the guests for their support over the years.

Meet Biruh – A Story of Courage & Resilience ✨

Biruh, a bright young man in our Brave Hearts Ethiopia program, has faced many challenges, including visual impairment. At one point, he felt discouraged and left university.

But with holistic support addressing his special needs, care, and counseling, Biruh has turned his story around. Today, he is back in university as a second-year Governance & Development Studies student at Hawassa University, scoring excellent grades with a GPA of 3.21 and 3.13 in his last semesters!

Biruh shared with our social workers: β€œEven in my dark times, I felt the love and support of a family. Persons with disabilities can achieve their goals if they keep striving for change.”

We are inspired by his journey of strength, resilience, and perseverance.

Celebrating Buhe (α‰‘αˆ„) at Brave Hearts Ethiopia (BHE)!

Our boys in the program warmed our hearts with their Hoyahoye song in the rainy season.

Buhe is a traditional holiday in Ethiopia in which young boys sing creative rhymes door to door and receive home baked bread (αˆ™αˆαˆ™αˆ) for sharing their joy.

Our Story - Changing Lives

Established in 2014, Brave Hearts Ethiopia is an NGO working to empower and improve the lives of orphan and vulnerable children (OVC), youth and their guardians in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. BHE supports families through a holistic care model including access to quality education, adequate nutrition, health care, counseling, training, micro finance and psychosocial support. These children and youth have often found themselves facing unthinkable situations and appalling hardships. Their guardians are usually their elderly grandparents or single mothers living in poverty that struggle to provide basic needs for the children under their care and themselves.

Vulnerable children and youth often thrive and succeed when provided with the opportunities they missed. BHE focuses on providing the children in the program access to quality education including covering school fees, providing them with school materials, uniforms and bags. The children receive tutorial lessons at the BHE drop in center along with after school healthy meals to re-energize for studying. At the drop in center, children and youth also are provided guidance and counseling as well as life skills training to support their psychosocial development.

BHE also works to ensure the child or youth has a secure and loving home to live in. We provide micro finance support through a revolving fund and training for guardians that can establish, run and grow their small business for sustainable livelihoods.

At BHE, we believe every child deserves full access to opportunities. BHE supports children with special needs have access to education and other services.
