We had the privilege of meeting with the Embassy of Ireland to discuss critical mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) needs in the wake of ongoing conflict in Northern Ethiopia.

This region has been deeply affected by three concurrent and protracted Grade 3 Humanitarian Emergencies: conflict, COVID-19, and drought. These emergencies have severely disrupted basic services and livelihoods, leaving communities with limited access to essential health care support systems.

Widespread psychological trauma is a pressing issue, with over five million people displaced and countless others suffering from the loss of loved ones, livelihoods, and even physical injuries. The mental health consequences of widespread Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and substance abuse, particularly among the youth, are of major concern.

In our meeting, the Embassy of Ireland reaffirmed their commitment to supporting mental health initiatives, drawing inspiration from Ireland's own “Sharing the Vision strategy”. Together, we discussed strategic interventions to address the urgent mental health needs of the region, focusing on both immediate and long-term solutions. 🤝

The road ahead is challenging, but we remain hopeful that with continued collaboration, we can restore and strengthen psychosocial support systems, helping the affected communities rebuild their resilience. 💪🌍
