The Ophthalmological Society of Ethiopia (OSE) is a professional association of ophthalmologists established in 1994 (G.C.). It is managed by an executive committee (EC) consisting of President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, the immediate Past President and an elected member. The office is located in the compound of the Ethiopian Medical Association (EMA) in front of the African Union (AU), near Mexico. There is a fulltime program coordinator, an Executive secretary and an Assistant. Members may utilize all facilities during office hours. This includes internet, laptops and equipment for community services. OSE has 140 members: of these
-51 ophthalmologists are working in governmental institutions
-80 are in private clinics and
- 10are involved in non- clinical/ program management tasks. Details can be accessed by OPH Manpower

The OSE is a member of the International Council of Ophthalmologists/ The International Federation of Ophthalmological Societies(ICO/IFOS) and associate member of The Opthalmological Society of Eastern Africa(OSEA). committee of the National Committee for Prevention of Blindness (NCPB) as the Vice Chairman. OSE is also on the Board of Trustees (BOT) of the Eye Bank of Ethiopia (EBE). The OSE aims to improve the quality of eye care in Ethiopia and eliminate avoidable blindness. This is done by enhancing ophthalmic service provision, by conducting outreach cataract campaigns, facilitating exchange of knowledge and experience, sponsoring members to attend national and international conferences (OSEA and AAO) , and funding research. The OSE encourages members to write and present papers, attend conferences and CME (Continuing Medical Education) and undertake research. An Annual Scientific Conference during which a panel discussion is held, papers are presented, lectures are given by visiting faculty and business meeting attended (with election of a new EC every two years) is a tradition. Hands-on-training, short/long community courses, and CME are conducted when possible and when funds permit. OSE is supported by ORBIS-Ethiopia, CBM and FMoH.
