2025: A Year of Impact and Resilience!!
As 2025 comes to a close, I look back with immense gratitude on a year defined by clinical breakthroughs, national policy shifts, and the unwavering resilience of our patients and healthcare teams.
2025: Major Highlights
1. Infrastructure & Innovation: A historic milestone for SPHMMC with the successful startup of Radiotherapy installation, bringing us closer to providing full-spectrum cancer care
2. MDT Success Stories: Our collaborative approach reached new heights. We celebrated the growth and high-volume case discussions (600+) of both the GI & Hepatobiliary, and the Breast & Endocrine MDTs, ensuring every patient benefits from a collective expert strategy
3. National Impact & Setting Standards: Honored to serve on the Technical Working Group (TWG) to prepare the 2nd Ethiopian National Cancer Control Program, the first National Breast Cancer Guidelines, and the Palliative Care Manual for Primary Healthcare documents.
4. Digital Leadership: Expanded my reach beyond the clinic through social media platforms (Telegram, Facebook, TikTok, and my website) providing evidence-based oncology education to hundreds of thousands
5. Global Voice: Proudly represented the Ethiopia on the ASCO Sub-Saharan Africa Regional Council, and the OncoDaily Medical Journal Editorial Team, ensuring African oncology has a seat at the global table
6. Advancing Oncology Research: Proud to contribute to the global scientific community as the PI of the multicenter prospective case-control study, “Causes and Outcomes of Esophageal Cancer in Ethiopia,” and as a Co-Investigator for the “I-ELCAP, utilizing AI for lung cancer screening at SPHMMC and TASH”. Moreover, our study, “Predictors of Advanced-Stage Presentation Among Patients with a Diagnosis of Breast and Cervical Cancer in Ethiopia,” published in the Oncologist journal in!!
7. Honored to receive the “የላቀ አገልግሎት ተሸላሚ” (Outstanding Service Award) from SPHMMC!!
Vision for 2026: Scaling Excellence
In 2026, my goal is to turn these new standards and tools into tangible outcomes for every corner of Ethiopia.
My Will: To operationalize our new guidelines at scale, maximize the impact of our radiotherapy services, and continue mentoring the next generation of hematologists and oncologists.
My Wish: I wish for a year of early diagnoses, improved treatment equity, and health for all. May 2026 bring us closer to a future where cancer is no longer a source of fear, but a challenge we are fully equipped to overcome.
