“When I got referred to CURE Ethiopia, I didn’t think my son’s treatment would be successful. But a friend of mine googled CURE and found the website https://ethiopia.cure.org/.
There, we saw before-and-after photos of many children who had received treatment here. I especially remember seeing a before photo of a small girl with severe knock-knees and an after photo of her happily standing with straight legs. That’s when I grew hopeful and decided to bring my son here,” said Belayneh, Yibeltal’s dad, when he first came to CURE Ethiopia.

Ever since then, Yibeltal has been undergoing surgical care to correct his condition and healing day by day.

CURE Children's Hospital of Ethiopia conducted its third mobile clinic in Jigjiga at JJU S.H.Yabare Comprehensive Specialized Hospital last week. The mobile clinic team, consisting of doctors, nurses, counselors, physical therapists, schedulers, and IT staff, saw 107 patients, 90 of whom were new patients and 17 were follow-ups. 13 patients have been scheduled for surgery at CURE Ethiopia, and seven patients will be undergoing complex long-term treatment.

We're grateful to JJU S.H.Yabare Comprehensive Specialized Hospital for the warm welcome and hospitality.

"I never took Fenet outside the house because I was afraid of what people might say when they saw her," Fenet's mom, Gelane, remembered.
Fenet was born with a condition called knock knees where her legs bend inwards, causing her knees to painfully "knock" into each other when she walked. For a lot of kids who have knocked knees at a very young age, they will grow out of them, but for Fenet, her knock knees just got worse as she got older.
Thankfully, Gelane had a chance (divinely arranged?) appointment with a doctor who knew about CURE Ethiopia. This doctor told Gelane not to waste any time and to bring Fenet to CURE!
Fenet received the surgeries she needed to straighten her legs, and Gelane now says, "My daughter used to stay inside all day. But now, she runs through the neighborhood with joy! I no longer keep her hidden—she is free. CURE's treatment and care have not only healed her legs but also removed the burden of shame from our lives!"

Scoliosis isn't just a cosmetic condition - it can impact a child's breathing, mobility, and quality of life. Across Africa, where access to pediatric spinal surgery is scarce, many children suffer in silence. CURE is working to change that by expanding our services to include spinal surgical services in our Kijabe, Kenya, and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia hospitals.

CURE Ethiopia Counselor Teddy fist bumps CUREkid Sengten as she recovers from her surgery.
The physical transformation kids go through at CURE is just one aspect of the change happening in their lives. For many of these kids, their disability has been a part of their identity. So to have that suddenly disappear, there's this monumental task of essentially figuring out who they are all over again. It's tough and scary, but we're so glad to be able to provide counseling services to the kids and their families as they go through it!

Complete transparency, there are more children with disabilities than we can physically treat. In a perfect world, a single CURE surgeon might be able to do about 500 surgeries in a year. And in a country like Ethiopia, which is Africa's second most populous country, there are more than 500 children born with treatable disabilities every year. The CURE surgeons are doing incredible work, but the need is greater than any one surgeon can meet.
BUT if this one CURE surgeon invests in the training of another surgeon, then together, they can conduct 1,000 operations a year. Then, if these two surgeons invest in training just one more each, we're up to 2,000 operations a year. Then, if these four surgeons invest in training one more, that's 4,000 surgeries a year!
With intentional training, the impact grows, and we have a real shot at not only keeping up with the need for pediatric surgery but even putting a permanent dent in it. And who knows, maybe one day, we can live in a world where no child suffering from a treatable disability goes without the surgery they need!
This is why training is an integral part of the work CURE does.
Here, CURE Ethiopia Surgical Fellow Dr. Ararso performs a clubfoot surgery.

Our Story:

Opened in 2008, the hospital is a state-of-the-art complex that provides modern medical and surgical care to physically disabled children. As Ethiopia consistently ranks among the poorest countries in the world, with few of its citizens having access to medical care, there is a great need for this level of care.

In addition, CURE Ethiopia fills a critical need as an orthopedic training site in the country, providing didactic and clinical training in pediatric and advanced orthopedic techniques, and is an international COSECSA-accredited training site.

Through a combination of in-hospital care, mobile clinics, and clubfoot clinics, CURE Ethiopia is providing superior care for the children of Ethiopia.
