The College Upskills Frontline Teams to Cut Lab Errors
College of Medicine and Health Sciences Directorate of Medical Laboratory Science education and service , in collaboration with Project HOPE, delivered an intensive on-site training on Clinical Specimen Collection from April 30 to May 2, 2026.
The program brought together 35 frontline healthcare professionals—medical laboratory scientists, nurses, and midwives—creating a multidisciplinary platform to standardize practices and strengthen patient care.
The training was officially inaugurated by Mr. Solomon Emishaw, Head of the Chief Executive Director’s Office of the College, who underscored the institution’s strong commitment to continuous professional development and clinical excellence.
Designed with precision, the training focused on reducing pre-analytical errors—the leading cause of laboratory inaccuracies. Participants enhanced their competencies in test requesting, proper specimen collection, safe tracking, and standardized transport, ensuring adherence to best practices across the diagnostic chain.
In his closing remarks, Dr. Degalem Baye, Deputy Corporate Director for Health Services, emphasized the hospital’s strategic focus on quality at the point of collection. He noted that improving specimen integrity is key to reducing rejection rates, enhancing diagnostic accuracy, and ultimately improving patient outcomes.
“Quality healthcare begins the moment a sample is collected. By mastering these skills, our frontline team is directly advancing diagnostic excellence.”
