Worldwide obesity has nearly tripled since 1975, and more than 90% of Americans are not in optimal metabolic health, with highly processed products from Big Food being one of the major forces driving this health decline.

A main contributor to the rise of global obesity rates is the increase of ultra-processed foods coupled with:

- Decrease in physical activity
- Chronic lack of sleep
- Increased stress

The obesity epidemic and metabolic health crisis fuel one another, exacerbating both obesity and metabolic health problems like insulin resistance, glucose dysregulation, high blood pressure, and Type 2 Diabetes.

However, we all have the power to reverse this trend! Here are a few things you can do today to combat the obesity epidemic in your own life:

1. Focus on whole, colorful foods. Aim to eat 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day.

2. Get an exercise routine. Try to do 3 days a week of 30 minutes or more of aerobic exercise, and 2 days a week of strength training to increase insulin sensitivity.
3. Prioritize sleep. Aim to get 7-9 hours of sleep a night, have a consistent bedtime and wake up time, and sleep in a cool, dark room to maintain a healthy circadian rhythm.

4. Build stress resilience. Try meditation, yoga, and deep breathing techniques to improve stress levels.

5. Find a community for support. Social connection is vital to our mental and physical health. Talk to the people in your life and start a health journey together.

As you age, it’s more difficult for your body to regulate and prevent conditions like insulin resistance even if you’re doing all the “right” things for your metabolic health. The good news: there are research-backed ways to change this narrative.

Aging comes with many metabolic changes that aren’t visible to the eye. By focusing on reversing insulin resistance and keeping our blood sugar levels balanced, you can reduce the physical, mental, and clinical signs of aging.

Skin health: is the most apparent sign of aging and the most discussed. Manage your blood glucose levels and care for your body inside and out.

Cognitive health: should be prioritized, especially as we age. Add physical and brain-activating activities to your day to conserve your brain health.

Hormonal health: is important as signs of menopause and andropause can begin as early as our 30s. Focus on a balanced diet emphasizing whole grains and fiber while limiting refined grains and excess sugar.

Muscle and bone health: are crucial as one of the most common symptoms of aging is loss of muscle mass or sarcopenia. Incorporate resistance training 2x weekly, including upper and lower body exercises.

Aging doesn’t have to be a daunting process. Try out a CGM to gain insight into your unique responses to external factors and start making personalized changes for your health goals.

Cortisol, the stress hormone, is essential to your survival - but its effects on insulin sensitivity are meant to be short-term.

It increases your blood glucose levels in order for you to have immediate fight-or-flight energy. It works in opposition of another hormone, insulin.

Insulin’s job is to unlock your cells so that glucose can enter and get transformed into energy (ATP). When your blood glucose levels rise as a result of cortisol, your pancreas produces more insulin to try to bring those levels back down to normal.

Too much cortisol for an extended period of time can start to weaken your cells’ response to insulin and break down your body’s ability to regulate your blood glucose levels - which sets you up for metabolic disaster.

It’s not always possible to completely remove yourself from a stressful situation, so research suggests that these techniques can actually help regulate your cortisol levels:
1. Deep breathing and breathwork: Just 5 minutes daily of cyclic sighing can help slow your heart rate and relieve stress[1].

2. Exercising: Just 10 minutes of walking can help improve mood, lower cortisol levels, and lower blood pressure[2].

3. Calling or texting a friend: Having some kind of reliable support system or community is a key part of building resilience to stress[3].

4. Spending time in nature: Going for a quick walk in a green space can lower cortisol levels, help you relax, and improve your mood[4].
