In the last workshop of our accessible yoga series, we investigate the principles for building and empowering communities through yoga practice. We borrow some principles from community dance and explore together how to apply them in a yoga context.

We gather what we have learned during the workshops and discuss how to bring the knowledge and questions into practice in line with yoga philosophical ideas.

Workshop on psychosocial aspects of Yoga and how to appreciate Yoga’s roots
2nd and 3rd of November 2024

Yoga in the Western culture can feel a bit rootless and lost in physical exercise with some few elements from Indian culture. This image of yoga, spaces where yoga is offered, and the pricing, can make yoga very exclusive to some folks. We ask, how to practice yoga with appreciation instead of appropriating Indian culture.

On the second weekend of our series of workshops we focus on decolonizing yoga and exploring how to practice with care and appreciation towards yoga’s roots.

We also explore what it means to practice yoga with a trauma-informed, resilience-supporting approach. We discuss the polyvagal theory and the nervous system in relation to yoga philosophy, and investigate how to support the nervous system from somatic perspectives. We approach trauma from the individual as well as from the collective perspective.

Teachers:

Vishnu Vardhani Rajan (they/them) is a Body-Philosopher and a Decolonial-Feminist Somatic and Yoga Practitioner, dedicated to cultivating embodied interpresence since 2005. They began practicing yoga at the age of nine and received formal training in yoga pedagogy from SVYASA (Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthana) in Karnataka.
With over 20 years of experience, Vishnu has taught yoga in various countries, including India, Finland, Germany, France, and Switzerland. Their yoga practice emphasizes the political body, integrating physical practice with a focus on decolonial and feminist perspectives.

Jennifer Gardenia (she/her) is a Chilean Licensed Occupational Therapist, an accessible and trauma-informed yoga teacher, and a neuro-somatic coach.

Kati Raatikainen (she/her) is an accessible yoga and movement teacher and a choreographer focusing on inclusion and ecosomatic bodywork.

Accessible and Adaptive Yoga Workshop 14th to 15th of September 2024

The first weekend of our series of workshops focuses on the principles and ethics of accessible yoga practice for all people. Accessible yoga is a practice that is grounded in yoga ethics, supported by props and is inclusive, adaptive, and trauma-informed. In an accessible yoga class, everyone can practice together, no matter their body-mind conditions.

During the workshop, we discuss diversity, equity, and inclusion and explore how to adapt asana practice for people in bigger bodies.

All the workshops take place at Humina, Uutiskatu 2, Helsinki.

Are you interested in accessible, trauma-informed yoga and movement practices?
This workshop series focuses on creating a social justice-centered movement around yoga. The six workshops focus on accessible and adapted yoga practice, aiming for diversity, equity and inclusion. We will explore how to practice with various bodily situations and abilities from a somatic and trauma-informed perspective, considering historical, personal, and collective contexts. We will practice cultural appreciation towards yoga’s roots with respect and integrate basic concepts from yoga philosophy into everyday practice. We will reflect on the colonized history of yoga and practice awareness of the future choices we make.
The workshops are aimed for yoga teachers and practitioners. All the bodyminds and abilities are welcome!

🇬🇧🇫🇮

Thank you to everyone who joined the accessible yoga movement in Helsinki this Spring, the weekly classes, and our first gathering in April!

At the gathering arose a need for a regular gathering for yoga teachers focusing on accessibility. We will start to organize this at Humina in the autumn a couple of times in a season.

We are super excited to offer a series of workshops starting in autumn with amazing visiting teachers and facilitators that we are planning right now. The workshops will cover various topics on accessibility, inclusion, adaptative and trauma-informed approaches, power dynamics, and social change within yoga and somatics.

Stay tuned, more info coming up soon!

Photo from the opening gathering at Humina by Anna Treier. In the middle of the picture there are three people discussing, two of them are sitting on a wheelchair, one on the floor. On the edges there are two pairs of people talking while standing.

Kiitos kaikille, jotka osallistuitte saavutettavaan jooga liikkeeseen Helsingissä tämän kevään aikana, viikkotunneille ja ensimmäiseen kokoontumiseemme huhtikuussa.

Kokoontumisessa nousi esiin tarve säännölliselle kokoontumiselle saavutettavuuden kanssa työskenteleville joogaopettajille. Alamme järjestää tapaamisia syksystä alkaen, pari kertaa kaudessa.

Olemme todella innoissamme uudesta työpajasarjastamme, jota parhaillaan suunnittelemme.

Etsimme valokuvaajaa 27.4 avajaistapaamiseen! We are looking for a photographer for the Opening gathering on the 27th of April!

🇬🇧 / 🇫🇮 - In the AYSP, we are centered on accessibility, adaptive yoga and somatic practices, trauma-informed approaches, and ethics of yoga and community building process.

WHAT DO WE CALL "ACCESSIBLE YOGA"?

When everyone can practice together no matter their body-mind conditions, it is called accessible yoga.

When the practice is props supported, inclusive, adaptive, and trauma-informed, it is called accessible yoga.

When no one will be left out because of their financial situation, it is called accessible yoga.

When agency and consent are centered, and all bodies are welcome, it is called accessible yoga.

When the practice is antiableist, diversity affirming and also honours yoga roots, it is called accessible yoga.
