They say the first year is the hardest. No advice from friends who were already mothers could truly prepare me for the reality of that first year—the exhaustion, the body aches, the emotional highs and lows, and the limited time I now found I had for myself.
Without a doubt, one essential activity that I always made time for after my daughter Leyla was born, and that helped ease my transition into motherhood, was postnatal yoga.
Postnatal yoga is a low-intensity form of yoga that addresses the physical, mental, and emotional challenges of being a new mother, as well as the aftermath of pregnancy. The poses focus on helping new mothers tone their bodies, regain their figures, and relieve stress.
Postnatal yoga offers the most benefits during the first three months after childbirth and has been shown to help with the following:
Strengthening core muscles - yoga poses help new mothers regain strength in their core muscles, including the pelvic floor and abdominal muscles, which can weaken during pregnancy and childbirth.
Relieving physical tension - yoga can help release tension in the shoulders, neck, and back—common areas of tightness for new mothers due to breastfeeding, carrying their baby, and lack of sleep.
Improving posture - poor posture is common for new mothers, especially when breastfeeding. Yoga helps improve posture by strengthening the back muscles and opening the chest.
Reducing stress and anxiety - yoga, combined with breathing exercises and meditation, can help reduce stress and anxiety levels, which can be high during the postpartum period.
Boosting energy - yoga poses and breathing techniques can help boost energy levels, which is particularly helpful for new mothers dealing with sleep deprivation and fatigue.
At Wild Shakti Yoga, all of our sessions embrace a holistic approach, addressing the interconnected aspects of wellbeing. This is especially important for new mothers who face a wide variety of changes and challenges.
