Apple Colanggo’s story and the reality of language challenges for Filipino nurses in Finland:
As a fellow Filipino nurse here in Finland, I want to share a recent story that many of us can relate to. Helsingin Sanomat featured the experience of Apple Colanggo, a Filipina nurse with over 16 years of experience, including more than a decade in Saudi Arabia. Like many of us, she came to Finland with high hopes, strong skills, and the dream of building a better future.
But despite her solid clinical background, she failed the qualification exam not because she lacked competence, but because her Finnish language skills weren’t yet enough for real clinical situations. The practical exam required fast communication, accurate documentation, and confidence in patient interactions, and the language barrier became the biggest obstacle.
Her story reflects a reality many Filipino nurses face in Finland:
• We bring experience, dedication, and compassion
• We study Finnish while working and adjusting to a new life
• Yet the jump from “classroom Finnish” to “clinical Finnish” is huge
• Many of us feel pressure, frustration, or fear of failing because of language
This is not just Apple’s story it’s the shared journey of many immigrant nurses trying their best to integrate and serve.
As a community here in Kainuu, let’s continue to:
• Support each other in learning Finnish
• Share resources, tips, and encouragement
• Advocate for better and more realistic language training
• Recognize the value and resilience of Filipino nurses
• Celebrate every small victory in our journey toward full qualification
We Filipinos are strong, compassionate, and hardworking. With the right support, we can thrive and contribute so much to Finnish healthcare.
