Vibration therapy could transform mental health treatment, claims Finnish innovator
Psychotherapist Kärkkäinen showcases pioneering Neurosonic technology at HOLOLIFE Summit in Tallinn.
The relationship between physical vibration and mental wellbeing took centre stage at the HOLOLIFE Summit in Tallinn last weekend, as Finnish psychotherapist Dr. Marco Kärkkäinen presented compelling evidence for vibration therapy as a holistic approach to health treatment.
Speaking to a packed auditorium at the HOLOLIFE Summit 2025 Europe on Saturday, Kärkkäinen explained how his Neurosonic technology stimulates the body's piezo receptors and central nervous system to enhance bodily functions, reduce inflammation, and improve mental health.
The inflammation-stress connection
"Stress and mood disorders often stem from bodily inflammation, leading to sleep loss and dopamine imbalance, which can cause light or moderate depression," Kärkkäinen told attendees at the three-day event held in Estonia's capital.
Drawing on his experience as a psychotherapist at Finland's largest private healthcare company, Kärkkäinen described how traditional talk therapy often reaches limits when dealing with patients whose physical symptoms have "taken the lead" over their mental state.
"When people come to psychotherapy, we can only reach a certain point. Then, there is another point that's very bodily – when it's kind of twisted – and you can't control it," he explained.
From musical inspiration to medical innovation
The development of the Neurosonic technology originated from an unlikely source – Kärkkäinen's background as a musician combined with an epiphany while watching "Saving Private Ryan" through his home theatre system.
"I could feel the vibration from the tank in the movie before I heard it," he recalled. "I knew that this was the answer: we need tactile sound – just to feel it, not to hear it."
Unlike sound waves, which affect individuals differently, Kärkkäinen's research suggests that tactile vibration produces more consistent physiological responses across different people. His technology uses transducers that generate vibrations without producing audible sound waves.
Beyond relaxation: physiological benefits
According to Kärkkäinen, the benefits of vibration therapy extend far beyond simple relaxation. "Our system stimulates body tissues and the central nervous system, activating parasympathetic functions to promote relaxation, recovery, and overall health," he said.
The physiological effects he described include increased lymphatic and blood circulation, improved metabolic function, reduced chronic pain, enhanced bowel function, and lowered blood pressure. Particularly significant, he claimed, is the technology's ability to balance the nervous system by increasing parasympathetic activity while decreasing sympathetic activation – a change measurable through heart rate variability.
The science of sensory override
One of the most intriguing aspects of the presentation focused on vibration's ability to interrupt negative thought patterns and physical discomfort.
"Vibration helps override negative thoughts and bodily sensations, emptying the mind—a state considered the best recovery you can have," Kärkkäinen said.
This "sensory override" effect may explain why many users report entering a deeply meditative state during sessions, a phenomenon that Kärkkäinen suggests has significant therapeutic potential for anxiety and pain management.
Ongoing research and future directions
While presenting data from studies using Firstbeat technology to measure recovery responses, Kärkkäinen also mentioned ongoing research at the University of Oulu investigating the effects of vibration on glymphatic circulation in the brain.
"By increasing lymphatic circulation in the brain, vibration therapy promises remarkable benefits and may represent the future of healthcare," he said, though he acknowledged that some research results remain preliminary.
The Neurosonic product line currently includes mobile mattresses, lounge chairs, professional treatment chairs, and even pet accessories that incorporate vibrational technology.
Beyond technology: the psychological dimension
Despite his enthusiasm for technological solutions, Kärkkäinen emphasized that attitude remains paramount in health outcomes.
"The psychological experience of our well-being is the most important thing in our lives," he noted. "If you have problems in your life but your attitude is 'It's okay, it will go away, I can handle it,' then you are on the victorious side."
As the HOLOLIFE Summit 2025 Europe concluded on Sunday, many attendees took the opportunity to experience the Neurosonic devices firsthand at demonstration stations set up throughout the venue, with several reporting sensations of deep relaxation and mental clarity.
Whether vibration therapy will ultimately transform healthcare as Kärkkäinen predicts remains to be seen, but his presentation certainly resonated with those seeking integrative approaches to physical and mental wellbeing.
