Ryushinkan is a very common name for martial arts clubs, also aikido clubs. Ryū (流) is mainly used as a suffix, meaning style, type, form, manner, system, school in Japanese. However, in my club’s name Ryū (柳) is written with a different kanji character that can be pronounced the same way, but also “yanagi” meaning willow. I received the name from Endo sensei in 2014 when I was looking for a name to describe the aikido in my club. In Japanese culture, the willow tree is associated with emotional flexibility, resilience, and the ability to bend without breaking.
