PSH Hospitals has once again demonstrated that world-class cardiac care is now accessible right here in Fiji, following the successful heart bypass surgery of a 57-year-old Lautoka resident who was previously advised to seek treatment overseas.
Pushpa Kanta of Field 4, Lovu, Lautoka, began experiencing persistent chest pain and initially sought medical attention at a hospital in Lautoka. After medical assessments, she was informed that she required urgent heart bypass surgery. However, she was told the procedure could not be performed locally and that she would need to travel to India for treatment.
โThe moment I heard I needed bypass surgery, I was very scared,โ Ms Kanta said. โI was told I had to go overseas, but I was not ready for that. I have no family in India, no one to take care of me, and the thought of travelling so far for such a big surgery made me feel very discouraged.โ
Feeling overwhelmed and uncertain, Ms Kanta later learned about PSH Hospitals through social media. Seeking a second opinion, she visited the hospital and met with the cardiac team, including world-renowned cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon Dr Sanjeev.
โI was surprised when I came to PSH Hospitals,โ she said. โThe hospital was very clean, the environment felt safe, and when we met Dr Sanjeev, he explained everything clearly and guided us step by step. He told me the surgery could be done right here in Fiji.โ
Within days, Ms Kanta underwent successful heart bypass surgery at PSH Hospitals, a procedure she had previously been told was not possible locally. The surgery and recovery process were completed within just a few days, allowing her to return home sooner than expected.
โIt lifted a huge burden off my shoulders and my familyโs shoulders that I did not have to travel overseas,โ she said. โEverything was done in just three to four days. The doctors and nurses were very nice and helpful. I can already feel changes in my body before, I couldnโt eat well or walk properly. Now I can eat, I can walk, and there is no pain. I did not expect to recover so quickly.โ
Ms Kanta is now preparing to return home and is urging other Fijians not to lose hope when faced with serious heart conditions.
โI want to tell the people of Fiji, if you need bypass surgery, just come to PSH Hospitals. They will take care of your problem. It is a very good hospital.โ
The Founder and Chief Executive Officer of PSH Hospitals Mr Parvish Kumar said Ms Kantaโs case highlights the hospitalโs mission to reduce the need for Fijians to travel overseas for critical medical care.
โOur goal has always been to bring world-class healthcare services to Fiji,โ the CEO said. โNo patient should have to leave their home, family, and support system to receive life-saving treatment. We are proud to offer advanced cardiac procedures, including bypass surgeries, right here in Fiji, delivered by experienced specialists and supported by modern facilities.โ
World-renowned cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon Dr Sanjeev said the success of such surgeries locally reflects the growing capabilities of Fijiโs healthcare system spearheaded by PSH Hospitals.
โHeart disease is one of the leading causes of death in Fiji, and timely intervention is critical,โ Dr Sanjeev said. โWith the right infrastructure, skilled medical teams, and post-operative care, complex cardiac surgeries can be safely and successfully performed here. Patients recover better when they are close to their families and familiar surroundings.โ
PSH Hospitals continues to strengthen its commitment to providing advanced cardiac care, along with a wide range of specialized services such as brain and spine surgeries, general surgery such as for hernia, gall bladder stones, plastic surgery, orthopedic surgery, urology surgery for kidney stones etc and gynecology procedures, ensuring that Fijians have access to quality treatment without the financial and emotional strain of overseas travel.
