Today, a team from the Nasinu Town Council had the privilege of joining the Assistant Minister for Finance, Hon. Esrom Immanuel, on a site visit to the transformative Emerald Bay Project in Nadawa. This visit was a valuable opportunity to update the Honorable Minister on the progress of the development and to engage in open discussions about some of the challenges currently faced. The Council expressed its continued support for this landmark initiative, which is set to reshape the economic and social landscape of Nasinu.

The Emerald Bay Project is a visionary $3.0 billion integrated tourism and urban development designed to become a self-sustaining smart city. It will feature six international-standard hotels, a 20,000-seat stadium and multipurpose sporting complex, commercial centers, retail outlets, and residential precincts with over 180 lots in Phase 1. The project also includes green energy systems, water harvesting infrastructure, and a marina with water transport services connecting to Nausori Airport and Suva. With its innovative design and scale, Emerald Bay is positioned to become a major hub for tourism, commerce, and sustainable living in Fiji.

For the people of Nasinu, Emerald Bay represents a powerful engine for growth. It is expected to create over 7,000 new jobs during both the construction and operational phases, offering employment opportunities across hospitality, retail, construction, and public services. The influx of tourism and business activity will significantly boost revenue for both the municipality and the national government. As a designated Special Economic Zone, the project is also set to attract both local and international investors, further accelerating development in the region.

Beyond economic benefits, Emerald Bay lays the foundation for Nasinu’s transformation into a modern urban center, supporting its goal of achieving city status by 2030. The Council is proud to be part of this journey and remains committed to ensuring that the people of Nasinu benefit from the opportunities this project will bring. We thank Hon. Esrom Immanuel for his continued support and engagement, and we look forward to sharing more updates as this exciting development unfolds.

Today marked a historic milestone as the Jeremiah Raibevu College community came together to witness the school’s very first Cadet Pass Out Parade.

The parade was officially reviewed by Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police Kasiano Vusonilawe, who praised the united efforts of teachers, parents, and community leaders in launching and supporting the cadet programme.

He highlighted that the initiative is more than just drills and uniforms—it’s about nurturing discipline, obedience, and character that pave the way for future success.

Among the many proud moments, special honours were given to Year 11 student Akuila Sadaro and Year 9 student Zephanaiah Daligalevu, who made history as the first cadets with disabilities to complete the programme and march proudly alongside their peers. Their courage and determination were met with heartfelt applause from the crowd.

In his address, A/ACP Vusonilawe reminded families that a child’s success is built on shared support:

“No child walks the path alone. Success is born from the sacred partnership between parents and teachers—one of guidance, encouragement, and shared purpose.”

This landmark event not only celebrated the achievements of our cadets but also reinforced the values of unity, discipline, and collective responsibility in shaping tomorrow’s leaders.

After a three-week closure for much-needed renovations, the Laqere Market in Nasinu has officially reopened its doors as of August 09th ! The upgraded facility now boasts improved washrooms, enhanced lighting, and a dedicated fish bay area—all key upgrades requested by our hardworking vendors and loyal customers alike .

This reopening marks a new chapter for the market, which has served the community for over five years. While the facelift has brought a fresh look and better amenities, the Nasinu Town Council is also addressing deeper infrastructure issues. Our CEO Felix Magnus confirmed that major sewer line repairs are still needed, as the current layout makes access difficult during blockages. Plans are underway to install chambers every three meters to ensure long-term functionality .

Despite these challenges, the spirit of the market remains strong. Vendors are excited to return, and shoppers can once again enjoy the vibrant atmosphere and fresh local produce that Laqere Market is known for.

Come down and support your local vendors. Let’s celebrate this new beginning together!

The recent Building Compliance Training attended by representatives from Nasinu Town Council, Lami Town Council, Suva City Council, Nausori Town Council, Luganville, and Port Vila City Council has successfully concluded after three impactful days of learning and collaboration. This regional initiative focused on strengthening building compliance practices, particularly around the structural elements of buildings—from the vetting of plans to on-site construction and the overall compliance process.

Participants gained valuable knowledge and a deeper understanding of current building codes, compliance requirements, and legal standards, equipping them to better oversee construction projects. A key outcome of the training was the improvement in risk management capabilities. The team learned how to proactively identify, assess, and mitigate risks, significantly reducing the likelihood of unsafe buildings. They also enhanced their ability to verify compliance with approved plans, ensuring that construction aligns with regulatory expectations.

Another major takeaway was the emphasis on better collaboration within compliance teams. This will enable faster processing of applications and foster more cohesive enforcement practices. Additionally, the training highlighted the importance of providing clear and comprehensive building checklists to ensure that all requirements are properly itemized and understood by stakeholders.

The training concluded with a powerful reminder from Mr. Felix Magnus, Chairman of Nasinu Town Council, who stated, “Integrity is the foundation of our work. With integrity, we can build a safe and sound home in Fiji.” His words captured the spirit of the training and the shared commitment to building safer communities.

A heartfelt vinaka vakalevu to Pacific TA and our dedicated facilitators—Mrs Frances Sullivan, Andre Winkelman (Principal Advisor Building Consents, Christchurch City Council), and Jitendra Bothara (Structural Engineer, Respiro Consulting)—for their invaluable guidance, expertise, and unwavering commitment throughout the training. Their contributions have empowered our teams to raise the bar for building safety and compliance across the Pacific.

Together, we are building not just structures, but a stronger, safer future for our communities.
