In a world-first medical breakthrough, researchers have successfully restored natural hearing by injecting stem cells directly into the inner ear, allowing damaged auditory nerves to regrow — something once considered irreversible. This pioneering therapy works by using lab-grown stem cells engineered to develop into auditory neurons — the vital nerve fibers that carry sound signals from the ear to the brain.

Once injected, these cells integrate seamlessly with existing tissue, forming new neural connections. Within weeks, early clinical trial participants began showing significant improvements in sound clarity and speech recognition, confirming the regeneration of nerve pathways.

The discovery marks a turning point in regenerative medicine and could transform treatment for the 430 million people worldwide living with hearing loss. Unlike hearing aids or cochlear implants that merely amplify sound, this therapy restores natural hearing function by repairing the biological system itself.

Experts believe the same regenerative principles could be extended to other forms of neural damage, potentially opening doors for treatments of blindness, paralysis, and degenerative neurological disorders. While large-scale trials are ongoing, scientists say this represents the first real step toward curing hearing loss entirely — not just compensating for it.

I’m Tom, an audiometrist in Fiji, dedicated to helping people hear better. For 13 years, I’ve worked to provide hearing aids, but too many Fijians—students, drivers, parents—can’t afford them.
Without government or major charity support, thousands are left struggling.
It’s time for change. Your support can bring the gift of hearing to those in need. A small donation can help fund a hearing aid, while sharing this message can reach others who care.
Please visit the GoFundMe link to contribute or learn more. Every donation, like, or share makes a difference. Together, we can build a legacy of hope in Fiji.
If you would like to help make a difference, please scan the code and either help with a donation - or at the least, share the page for others to see.
Vinaka.

This is why it is important to take action sooner than later.
Those who put up with the effects of hearing loss for many years and who later decide to use hearing aids, take the risk of those ‘new’ sounds not making much sense during the introductory period.
The brain ‘forgets’ how to process speech sounds that were not previously heard and it takes time for the ‘relearning’ process to turn those sounds into meaningful speech.
Always better to act sooner than later when dealing with hearing loss.

It’s noisy out there!

Every person has a different idea of what makes noise “loud,” but there are some things we all can do to turn the volume down a little.

Tinnitus (or noises in your ears) is usually a sign of declining hearing ability and can sometimes be assisted by a GP (ear wax removal) or through the use of a hearing aid.
Best to discuss your concerns with a doctor first.

One in three Australians live with some degree of tinnitus, which can interfere with many aspects of daily life and have an impact on mental health and well-being.

Science is slowly developing answers towards a ‘cure’ for hearing loss.

As we age, many of us will eventually need hearing aids. In some cases, the reason for this may be a signaling pathway that controls auditory sensory cell function and is downregulated with age. Researchers at the University of Basel are uncovering clues.

Incredible scientific process to restore hearing might be closer than we thought!

A team of Harvard Medical School scientists has come up with a new drug-like cocktail of molecules that can successfully regenerate hair cells — a potentially groundbreaking treatment for hearing loss.

We receive constant enquiry from concerned parents about their young children’s hearing problems - a reasonable question (especially considering that many consider us to be a medical facility), but these questions should first be directed to your family doctor.
South Pacific Hearing Aids only reviews teenagers and above for the possibility of rehabilitation through the use of hearing aids - we are not a medical facility.
Should we detect a hearing issue that requires medical intervention, you will be immediately directed to a medical professional.
Having said that, the following article may give some much needed information to those parents of infants and pre-teenagers who have intermittent bouts of hearing loss, sometimes accompanied by pain.
We are fortunate in Fiji to have the availability of skilled medical professionals and Ear, Nose and Throat specialists (ENTs) who will become involved should your doctor see a need to refer you or your child.
Any pain, discharge or intermittent hearing problems should first be assessed by a qualified GP - always!
Enjoy the read!

This too shall pass.
