Chronic disease such as diabetes and other NCDs make up 80% of all deaths in Fiji... its time we put resources in tackling this problem. There have been too many lives lost over decades, too many disabilities too count and too many families made to suffer..the time to act is now!!

Diabetes is more serious than many people think.

It doesn’t just affect your sugarβ€”it can damage your eyes, kidneys, heart, nerves, and more.

Please, don’t ignore the signs. Check your blood sugar regularly and take care of yourself.

Strengthening Mental Health Legislation in Fiji: A Major Step Toward a Rights-Based, People-Centred Mental Health SystemπŸŒπŸ’™

Mental health is a cornerstone of overall health and wellbeing. Across the Pacific, countries are championing positive change to expand access to community-based mental health services and combat stigma and discrimination.

In Fiji, the Government is taking bold strides to reform the Mental Health Act, ensuring it reflects principles of dignity, choice, and empowerment. With support from World Health Organization Western Pacific Region and WHO South Pacific Office, the Ministry of Health and Medical Services has successfully completed a nationwide round of internal consultations across all four divisions.

This important milestone is part of a broader legislative review process aimed at shaping a mental health system that is more inclusive, equitable, and responsive to the needs of all Fijians.

This journey is not just about changing lawβ€”it’s about transforming lives through:

🧠 Ending stigma and discrimination
🀝 Strengthening access to community-based mental health services
πŸ’¬ Uplifting the voices of people with lived experience
πŸ›οΈ Promoting inclusive, participatory policy-making

By working together and grounding this process in the voices of communities, Fiji is paving the way for a future where mental health is protected, promoted, and prioritized for all.

Have you been given prescription meds without a prescription?

Even if you’ve taken the medicine before, every new round of prescription medicine requires a valid prescription from your doctor. This protects your health and ensures the right dosage and monitoring.

Pharmacies are not allowed to dispense prescription-only meds without a prescription. If you see this happening, report it to us on 155 or email complaints@consumersfiji.org.

Your health. Your right. Stay safe.

REVIEW OF THE MENTAL HEALTH ACT 2010

The Mental Health Act 2010 provides the legal foundation for mental health services, treatment, and the protection of individual rights in Fiji.

However, with evolving global best practices, increasing service demands, and experiences gained over the past decade, a comprehensive review and update of the Act is now necessary.

Ministry of Health & Medical Services - Fiji, through the National Wellness Centre and St Giles Hospital, and in consultation with key stakeholders, has initiated this amendment process. The goal is to strengthen the legislation so it better reflects human rights standards, practical service delivery realities, and the cross-sector nature of mental health support.

The Technical Working Group (TWG) held its second workshop yesterday to continue planning and guiding this review process. The TWG brings together diverse stakeholders, including representatives from health, justice, education, police, social services, civil society, and mental health service users.

The meeting was also supported by Dr Jiang Long from the World Health Organization Western Pacific Region, who is providing ongoing technical support for the review.

This group will provide technical and strategic direction, coordinate sectoral inputs, and ensure the revised Act is people-centred, contextually relevant, and implementable. Their collective expertise will help shape legislation that supports integrated, rights-based, and sustainable mental health care for all Fijians.
