So nice to see Ana doing well now as an adult and an RHD champion. I remember her from my time at Labasa Hospital in 2012–2013. She was always compliant with her benzathine penicillin and well supported by her family.

It was an incredible honour to attend the 9th World Congress of Paediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery and to share a glimpse of our Pacific story. My sincere thanks to Dr. Kirsten Finucaine for introducing me to this platform.

The congress was a powerful experience, learning from global experts about the history, current work, and future directions in this field, while also putting faces to the names I’ve only known through journals and emails. From hearing directly from patients about their lived experiences to meeting the developers of Strep vaccines, every moment reinforced the importance of collaboration.

Though we may sometimes feel isolated in our small island nations, this gathering reminded me that we are not alone. We are united in the shared mission of improving care for children with heart disease, and I was deeply moved by the willingness of everyone to contribute in whatever way they can.

I return home inspired, hopeful, and committed to strengthening these connections so that together, we can make a lasting difference.

Vinaka & Ro Rabwa Phyllis Kala of Heart Heroes Fiji and Thomas Russell for helping me with my presentation. Much appreciated.

The latest Uto Bulabula – Healthy Hearts initiative has come to a close, with all 13 young patients from Fiji and across the Pacific safely home following their successful cardiac surgeries.

Since launching last year, the programme has expanded to include Tonga and the Solomon Islands, giving more Pacific children access to life-saving cardiac care — a true testament to the power of partnership and shared purpose.

Each milestone reflects a collective commitment to creating lasting change for Pacific children and their communities.

Smiles were all around today, among clinic staff and our young patients as they underwent their post-operative consultations with Dr Maryanne Kora’ai.

These follow-ups mark an important stage in the Uto Bulabula – Healthy Hearts initiative, ensuring each child continues to recover well after their life-saving cardiac surgeries. The transformation has been extraordinary, as children who were once struggling with cardiac conditions are now healthy, active, and full of life.

The collaboration between the Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Children’s Hospital, Hearts4Kids Foundation, and the Pasifika Medical Association Group, through the New Zealand Medical Treatment Scheme, continues to create lasting impact and strengthen paediatric cardiac care across the Pacific.
