An interesting review on the potential of plant-based diets for the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, as well as the prevention of cancer.

"There is a general consensus that the elements of a whole-foods plant-based diet—legumes, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and nuts, with limited or no intake of refined foods and animal products—are highly beneficial for preventing and treating type 2 diabetes.

Equally important, plant-based diets address the bigger picture for patients with diabetes by simultaneously treating cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death in the United States, and its risk factors such as obesity, hypertension, hyper-lipidemia, and inflammation.

The advantages of a plant-based diet also extend to reduction in risk of cancer."

An interesting read about a recently presented observational study by the University of Glasgow.

"The analysis found that compared to meat-eaters, vegetarians had significantly lower levels of 13 biomarkers, including: total cholesterol; low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol; apolipoprotein A , apolipoprotein B; gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) and alanine aminotransferase (AST); insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1); urate; total protein; and creatinine.

Research presented at this year’s ECO shows that vegetarians appear to have a healthier biomarker profile than meat-eaters. This applies to adults of any age and weight, and is also unaffected by smoking and alcohol consumption, according to a new study in over 166,000 UK adults. Biomarkers can ha...

An interesting study on the association between sleep and dementia.

" Persistent short sleep duration at age 50, 60, and 70 compared to persistent normal sleep duration was also associated with a 30% increased dementia risk independently of sociodemographic, behavioural, cardiometabolic, and mental health factors.

These findings suggest that short sleep duration in midlife is associated with an increased risk of late-onset dementia."

Sleep dysregulation has been linked to dementia, but it is unknown whether sleep duration earlier in life is associated with dementia risk. Here, the authors show higher dementia risk associated with short sleep duration (six hours or less) in a longitudinal study of middle and older age adults.
