POWER TO LIFE-A handbook for people newly diagnosed with HIV in Fiji.

This booklet was developed by the Rainbow Pride Foundation in collaboration with the Believers Support Group of PLHIV, FJN+ Fiji Network of People Living with HIV, UNAIDS Pacific and the Fiji Ministry of Health and Medical Services HIV HUB Medical Officers. It is adapted from the National Association for People Living with HIV Australia (NAPWHA) with the support from ASHM. It was contextualised to the Fijian context with funding assistance from the New Zealand High Commission in Suva, Fiji.

The booklet was also translated to Itaukei and Hindi languages. They can be accesed in the links below:

National Faith HIV & AIDS Awareness Day – On August 25- (apologies for the late post).

We honor National Faith HIV & AIDS Awareness Day (NFHAAD), a day dedicated to uniting communities of all faiths in the fight against HIV stigma and in support of people living with HIV.

Since its founding in 2017, NFHAAD has encouraged people of faith to engage in dialogue, provide education, and take compassionate action. Faith leaders have long played a crucial role in breaking down stigma, promoting HIV testing, and offering love without judgment.

As the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu once said:
"We are all God's children, and we must care for one another without fear or prejudice."

At Living Positive Fiji, we recognize that HIV is not just a medical issue, it’s a matter of dignity, equity, and community.

Together, we can create a world, a Fiji where faith is a source of healing, not stigma.

UNAIDS advisor to the Pacific, Renata Ram makes a point worth noting. She believes imposing restrictions on the sale of clean needles and syringes, will push people underground, making it harder for them to connect to services.

The testing kits we use have a window period of 3 weeks.

The Window Period. What You Need to Know

The window period is the time between when someone gets HIV and when it can be detected by a test. During this time, HIV is already in the body, but most tests can’t find it yet because the immune system hasn’t made enough antibodies.

Why it matters:

Even if a test is negative during the window period, HIV can still be passed on through unprotected contact with certain body fluids.

How long is the window period?

Most rapid tests: about 3–12 weeks

Lab-based antigen/antibody tests: about 2–6 weeks

How to prevent HIV:

✅Use condoms correctly every time

✅Take PrEP if you’re HIV-negative and at risk

✅If you think you’ve been exposed, ask about PEP within 72 hours

✅Avoid sharing needles or sharp instruments

✅Test regularly and know your status

Note: A negative test result during the window period isn’t always final. Retest after the window period for accurate results.
