Final Day of the Ophthalmic Talanoa Session
It has been a great week of learning and sharing for our eye doctors, nurses, ophthalmic technicians, optometrist and current students.
We extend our sincere thanks to all the facilitators, the organising committee, and our sponsors for their efforts and time. A special acknowledgment to The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ for their funding and continuously encouraging workforce development opportunities and for their incredible support in building the eye care workforce not only in Fiji but across the Pacific. Without the scholarships and the wraparound approach to workforce strengthening, our Pacific nations would still rely heavily on visiting overseas specialists. With your support we have been able to develop our local leaders to provide their own eye care services.
This year, with the generous support of additional sponsors, we were able to invite regional participants to the Fiji Eye Care Workshop and have more Fiji participants. Vinaka vakalevu to RANZCO, APAO, and Bayer for their sponsorship, and their contributions as speakers and trainers. As well as to all our eye stakeholders, partners, self-sponsored participants, and presenters.
Finally, a heartfelt thank you to our dedicated staff who held the fort while other eye clinicians refreshed and upgraded their skills.
Together, we continue to move towards stronger, self-sufficient eye care for our region.

The Pacific Eye Institute offers eye care training for doctors and nurses from the Pacific region. The only training facility of its kind in the Pacific, The Institute is leading the charge against avoidable blindness by countering the massive shortage of eye specialists in the region.
What training is offered at the Pacific Eye Institute?
Before the Pacific Eye Institute was established, Pacific doctors had to go to Papua New Guinea for training. Now they can train in their own region.
The Institute offers a series of courses focused on the particular eye care needs of the Pacific and provides professional development and support to graduates and eye care workers. It also advocates for investment in eye care and undertakes research. Courses are administered by Fiji National University’s College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences.
The Pacific Eye Institute is a significant provider of eye care services in Fiji and in outreach locations across the Pacific, performing around 2,000 eye surgeries a year. This means there are good opportunities for eye nurses and doctors in-training to get practical experience.
