RFHAF is grateful to the Ministry of Health & Medical Services - Fiji for the opportunity and support to lead this year’s HIV campaign at the Hibiscus Festival. With HIV cases rising in Fiji, RFHAF is also collaborating with 🌈 Rainbow Pride Foundation 4 LGBTQ Rights and Equality in Fiji in this festival to raise awareness, break stigma, and empower our communities. RFHAF acknowledges Rainbow Pride Foundation 4 LGBTQ Rights and Equality in Fiji for providing peer educators to assist us in this HIV campaign.

Being on HIV medication (ART) greatly reduces the risk of transmitting HIV, but it does not automatically mean a person cannot infect their partner. What really matters is the viral load — the amount of HIV in the blood.

If someone’s viral load is undetectable (very low because medication is working well), the risk of transmission is effectively zero, this is the principle behind U=U (Undetectable = Untransmittable).

If the viral load is detectable (even if they are on medication), transmission is still possible.

So, being on HIV medication is very protective, but it’s not a guarantee. Regular monitoring and taking meds consistently are key to keeping the viral load undetectable.
