🐴🐕 Equine vs. Canine Spines🦴
Did you know that horses and dogs have major differences in their spines? Understanding these differences helps animal chiropractors provide targeted care for your four-legged friends! 👐

🔹 Horses (Equine) have long, flexible spines with 18 thoracic vertebrae, designed for power and movement. They also have 7 cervical, 6 lumbar and 5 sacral vertebrae.
🔹 Dogs (Canine) have shorter spines with 13 thoracic vertebrae. Their spines are more compact, supporting agility and weight distribution. They have 7 cervical vertebrae the same as the horse but have 7 lumbar and 3 sacral vertebrae.

📍Whether it’s helping with performance issues, pain relief, or improving overall well-being, chiropractic care can be of benefit for both horses and dogs!

➡️ Chiropractic care can improve mobility, reduce pain, and improve their quality of life! 🐾

Love this!

I can’t stress enough the importance of NOT feeding a fancy mash when it gets cold, rather add warm water and 1-2 Tbs of salt to your horse’s existing feed.

It’s the fundamental rule of feeding horses- transition over the course of 1-2 weeks. Cold and hot weather are already stressors! There’s no reason to add to it by throwing in a new feed (or hay for that matter.)

Tuesday tip

Backing up is a low-impact exercise with no moment of suspension. It can be done in-hand and ridden. You horse should move his limbs in diagonal pairs.

Performed well, it requires your horse to carry more weight on his hindquarters, and maintain increased hindlimb, lumbosacral and back joint flexion throughout the stride cycle.

Executed correctly with relaxation, impulsion and with the head lowered, the movement increases the throacic vertebral rotation, encourages core recruitment of the abdominals , thoracic sling and hip flexors. It also contributes to back mobility, the ability to collect and good posture.

For maximum benefit ask your horse to back up in-hand daily. Start with 1 or 2 steps and progress to 20 steps. The aim is good quality, long, marching steps.

Going through my notes this morning on my laptop and found this great diagram, I must rifle through my bookcase to see where this one came from & then I’ll update this post with a reference.

It’s a great diagram which visualises saddle fit in relation to the scapula and spine which is super important, not just how the horse may look from the outside. 🤍
