🐣EJVES April Headlines have arrived!

The issue starts with 3 Editorials: the first two share some perspectives on CREST-2. The third editorial highlights some articles from the EJVES Vascular Forum.

The April edition contains 3 Editor's Choice Papers:

-The Prevalence of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm in First Degree Relatives: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis by Nina Fattahi et al.

-A Systematic Review of Interventions to Improve Guideline Directed Secondary Cardiovascular Risk Reduction in Patients with Peripheral Arterial Disease by Sophie James et al

-Fully Automatic Volume Segmentation Using Deep Learning Approaches to Assess the Thoracic Aorta, Visceral Abdominal Aorta, and Visceral Vasculature by Anna Louise Pouncey et al

We continue our reading with 3 Issue Highlights. The first one is on type A acute aortic dissections, followed by a paper on calcified femeropopliteal PAD, and finishes on an article on deep learning application of YOLOv8 for aortic dissection screenings.

You'll be glad to learn that the EJVES April issue has 5 Open Access publications and a large variety of additional papers.

How should thoracic aortic care be organised before treatment even begins?

In the first episode of our new Q&A series on the ESVS 2026 Clinical Practice Guidelines on Descending Thoracic and Thoracoabdominal Aortic Diseases, Suzanne Stokmans is joined by Anders Wanhainen, Carlota Fernandez-Prendes, and Athanasios Katsargyris to unpack the decisions behind the guideline’s opening chapter.

This episode looks beyond procedures to the questions that shape outcomes from the start.

Advances in imaging have transformed the management of aortic disease, particularly in the diagnosis, procedural planning and follow-up of type B aortic dissection.

This ESVS Academy workshop provides an intensive, case-based exploration of modern aortic imaging strategies across the entire patient pathway. Using a real-world type B dissection case as the central learning framework, participants will explore how imaging guides clinical decision-making from initial diagnosis through intervention and long-term surveillance.

The course will focus on practical optimisation of imaging techniques, including dynamic CTA and MRA, fusion imaging, IVUS, CO₂ angiography, cone-beam CT and contrast-enhanced duplex ultrasound.

Designed as a highly interactive learning experience, the workshop combines focused expert lectures with hands-on practical sessions and a simulation-based operating room scenario. Participants will work in small groups to analyse imaging datasets, plan treatment strategies and perform simulated procedures, while learning how to optimise intra-operative imaging and manage technical challenges.

The second day features a structured simulation exercise in which participants plan and perform treatment of a type B dissection in a realistic OR environment, integrating advanced imaging tools and team-based decision making.

Centre of the month - Hospital Quirónsalud Marbella

We had the chance to exchange with Fernando Gallardo, Head of the Department of Angiology and Vascular Surgery. Hospital Quirónsalud Marbella's recent contributions have been noticed and highlighted! We thank you for your dedicated work.

Here's what he's got to say 👇

"Brief introduction about myself and my center

I am a vascular surgeon with a main focus on minimally invasive procedures and a special interest in complex venous disease, and I serve as Head of the Department of Angiology and Vascular Surgery at Hospital Quirónsalud Marbella, a high-complexity private center with a strong commitment to innovation, data-driven medicine, and international collaboration. Our unit manages a high volume of patients with chronic venous disease, venous thrombosis, and advanced venous interventions, supported by an organized clinical structure that facilitates participation in international registries.

What motivated your center to join the registry?

Our primary motivation was to actively contribute to the generation of real-world evidence in venous disease at a European level. We strongly believe that multicenter registries such as EVeR are essential to complement clinical trials, reflect daily clinical practice, and ultimately improve patient care through robust, shared data.

We also a knowledge world reference specialist as Makis Everignos, Stephen Black and Gerry O’Sullivan that inspired our team to learn and improve management of venous complex disease, without them we would have not started our program.

How does participation in EVeR align with your center’s clinical priorities in venous disease?

Participation in EVeR is fully aligned with our team and quironsalud clinical strategy, which is based on standardization of care, structured outcome assessment, and continuous quality improvement. The registry allows us to audit our practice, benchmark outcomes, and reinforce a patient-centered, evidence-based approach to venous disease management.
