What a week we just had with and . Running around the Bernese Oberland and then racing the Eiger Ultra races from Grindelwald on Saturday. We had such fun, words just can’t describe. New friends made and memories for a lifetime. And this was work for me! 😂🙏😂

Another beautiful Pueblo Blanco. Antequera is a lovely sleepy Andalusian town you could easily spend a few days relaxing and visiting the surrounding countryside.

I’m heading into Malaga today which I’ve been told is so much more than an airport destination! I hope so as I’ve got two nights and plenty of time before I fly to Geneva on Wednesday.

Day 33 Marrakech to….. Ronda

Ronda is a very pretty town and although it’s touristy it has a lovely vibe about the place.

The accommodation options were lacking and pricey and I changed my booking last minute. It turns out the campsite I cycled past on the outskirts of town was probably the best option and I thought that when I saw it. But I couldn’t cancel my hotel without losing the money so I am making the most of a less than average place for more than average price. I’ll be glad to stop paying out for crap places soon.

I hope to explore Ronda a little more tomorrow morning before departing for Antequera.

I got stopped by a Spanish cyclist today and wasn’t sure what exactly he wanted by his sign language, if I was on Hampstead Heath I probably wouldn’t have realised he wanted a bicycle pump! Anyway I gave him my pump but it removed his valve core when he took it off. So out came my core remover and then I also gave him a CO2 pump to properly inflate his tyre. So after carrying so much gear for 5 weeks, today I got to use some of it! Yay.

Day 31 on the road to…

After a week in the Tarifa area waiting for bike bits, then a small national state of emergency, followed by Levante wind, followed by torrential wind.

My plan yesterday was to start the journey towards Ronda. I was following a bikepacking route called the Altravesur. The route took me down some strange trails that I wouldn’t have chosen, past a landfill, onto trails I wouldn’t call trails. Then the trail turned to cement like mud, trashed my drivetrain, chain wouldn’t stay on. It resulted in me standing in a puddle up to my calves splashing muddy water on the bike to try and clear things! After this I found a road, booked a Hostal, cycled 98km and 1800m, and broke myself. The last 20km were all uphill making it a long day on the bike.

Today I’m staying put in Gaucin, seems a lovely Pueblo Blanco. Lots of British tourists that can’t even make the effort to ‘hablar un poco de español’. Time to hide.

I don’t know why I can’t seem to do sensible days on the bike. My plan for the day was 45km and at that point I hadn’t seen anywhere I could camp, only had a €150 hotel option so decided to beast myself.

I never intended to spend so much time in Tarifa but things happen. I was waiting for a bike rack and bag to arrive to continue my journey. The DHL Express delivery was less than express, arriving too late yesterday to make any sense for me to hit the road.

I wasn’t able to buy food supplies anyway due to the national state of emergency caused by the Spanish electricity grid going into melt down. Power finally came back on this morning.

So now I have 90kmh winds to deal with and a day of heavy rain tomorrow. Should I stay or should I go now, if I stay there will be trouble, if I go it will be double.

I’ve got a week to do 250km so no real rush.

Having rode my bike around the town yesterday to get a feel for the wind, it was brutal. At times I was blown up hills unassisted and other times I could barely move. Today seems windier.

A few days of hanging, chilling, reflecting, and cleaning the bike in Tarifa while I wait for a replacement part. Onwards into the mountains for some wild camping and exploring as soon as DHL deliver tomorrow!

Day 23 (24/25) Marrakech to Spain. Did you see what I did there?

As I left my hotel in Tetouan the owner questioned why I was spending a night in Tangier and not going straight to Spain. I really hadn’t thought about it. Within 15 minutes my ferry was changed, my hotel cancelled and I was on my way to Tangier to exit Morocco.

I’ve been in Tarifa for two nights, chilling out while I wait for some replacement bike parts to enable me to continue my journey more easily.

At the moment I plan to cycle to Ronda over a few days and at that point I may or may not pull the plug. I can catch a train to Malaga and exit back to France from there.

After nearly three years of full time travel I am tired. I realised when I returned to Chamonix in March, prior to this trip, that I need some roots and stability in life again. My time in Morocco has reinforced that feeling for me. I want to be more settled and spend time in the mountains I love. So that’s the medium term plan. Finish my summer of guiding, find a place to live, and work on all the other plans that have been hold while I’ve wandered the world. I’ll still travel but to take holidays rather than being a ‘Ramblin’ Man’.
