Rae Baxter Arts Counselling

Rae Baxter Arts Counselling MBACP
I'm Rae - A therapist for children (4y+), adults and parents. I use a 1:1, client-led approach to talking/ arts therapy. Hi, I'm Rachael.

I have 20 years of experience supporting children and parents; 10 years in schools and 10 years as a qualified counsellor. I am an Integrative Arts Counsellor. Art therapy is very powerful as it taps into the subconscious and enables the child to express their inner world and feelings. I draw upon a breadth of different theories, knowledge and experience in my work, as each person is unique.

It's strange but after seeing and hearing snippets of the craziness that is going on right now with laws, loos and assaults I feel a little apprehensive about visiting UK next month...

With this current climate it feels really important to name loudly that I provide a safe space for 2SLGBTQIA+ clients of all ages within my therapy practice.

You are safe here 🏳️‍🌈

I also offer parent consultation to think about how best to support q***r children/ young people within the family/ system around them.

THIS!!
Can you imagine if everyone had a kind, compassionate, encouraging, patient inner voice, that loved and supported us unconditionally?
How different our world would be! 💗

We CAN change the way we speak to ourselves.

How to get there:

Catch our inner voice to interrupt the old tape recording(s).

Begin to write new 'scripts' to repeat on the regular.

Repeated experiences of being validated, heard, seen, empathised with to change our brain on a physical level. Our relationship with our therapist is literally a healing one!

Thanks neuroplasticity 🧠

A mini check-in with yourself. This is an effective way to see if you are gripping and holding. It's a reminder to breath, relax and release.

When we are holding emotional memories, ruminating about the past or worrying about things that haven't happened yet it creates tension in our body.

Something on your mind and heart? Book in to express it out of your body in a confidential, held space. We can process it together to help lighten the load.

Therapy can feel 'taboo', 'extreme', 'out of reach' for some. The 'tape recordings' in our head create obstacles to seeking support.

We can take it step by step, together.

💭 Shared with permission - "I can see that you are absolutely f@ #*ing awesome at what you do"
..I love this statement because it's to the point; no mincing of words!

What I 'do' is a combination of skills and experience learned over many years. My shortlist would be:

👂 Listening (to really hear, not just respond)

🗣 Paraphrasing (deepening understanding through reflection)

✅️ Validating feelings/ experiences (connecting with your story)

🔐 Safety (a calm, steady presence fostering trust and a regulated nervous system)

For all of this (and more) book in an initial chat/ session ⬇️

We take on our familial role by age 4; these patterns are entrenched.

🧠 Fortunately with neuroplasticity we can literally re-wire through the therapeutic relationship.

We break the chain and heal the family line.

Some wise words on addiction from the legendary Gabor Maté - "In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts" (photo).

As Gabor explains addiction comes in the form of many different behaviours, as well as the use of different substances.
Addiction is actually very common.
Some addictions carry more social stigma then others.
It's all the same in terms of the brain.
Whether it's disordered eating, shopping addiction, workaholism, alcoholism, he**in addiction etc.
Anxiety and self-soothing behaviour are at the root of addiction. These maladaptive coping mechanisms are established early in life, when we have a lack of soothing from our childhood environment/ relationships.
The healing work with addiction includes being accepting, self-compassionate and using mindful awareness when the addictive urge arises.
Having therapeutic support is beneficial, in the form of personal therapy/ a 12 - step programme.
If you want to talk more about addiction or any other mental health issues feel free to get in touch - hello@rachaelbaxter.com

🌳 If you have access to a forest/ green space try increasing the amount of time you spend in nature.
Switch your phone off (beeps and buzzes trigger a physiological response) and take a pause.
'Just be' in the trees, moss, fresh air.
Slowly crunching leaves underfoot, dappled sunlight and magical birdsong.
THIS is what we need to improve our physical, mental and emotional well-being, to counteract our 'virtual' life.
And...it's free! 🌲
