Scientists use nanotechnology to show that Vitamin D signals nitric oxide to repair blood vessels
In a recent study published in the International Journal of Nanomedicine researchers used nanotechnology to study the real time effects of vitamin D3 on the lining of blood vessels.
Although we typically think of vitamin D3 relating to the health of bones, a correlation between vitamin D3 levels and cardiovascular health has been observed in many recent studies.
Scientists at Ohio University used nanosensors to examine the effects of vitamin D3 on single endothelial cells which line the arteries. The nanosensors have diameters about 1,000 times smaller than a human hair.
They discovered that vitamin D3 significantly stimulates nitric oxide, which is a signaling molecule in the regulation of blood flow and clot formation.
Vitamin D3 was also associated with lower cardiovascular system oxidative stress.
This effect of vitamin D3 may prove to be beneficial in the support of healthy blood pressure and other conditions related to the heart and circulatory system.
